Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Horse Sport Ireland (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: That is what I am asking about in the context of countenancing the misinformation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Horse Sport Ireland (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: It is greatly important.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges Facing the Horse Sport Industry: Horse Sport Ireland (Resumed) (15 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Move forward as in having a process or having a board?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Invasive Species Policy (14 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Collins, and thank him for taking time out of his very busy schedule to deal with this issue on behalf of the Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Deputy Noonan. As everybody may be aware, the mink, a member of the weasel family, is not natural to Ireland but was imported in the 1950s as part of a commercial...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Invasive Species Policy (14 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I thank the Minister of State for his response. The kernel of the response was on what was in place before and has expired, and that was the bounty scheme. With the greatest respect to the NPWS and its implementation of the invasive species Acts, identifying areas, sometimes very small areas, where there may be a rare species and concentrating on that, does not or will not work. Mink can...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I would like to be associated with the Cathaoirleach's remarks congratulating my political cousin. There is no biological relationship but we can claim cousinship when it comes to politics. I have to admit, it was a great achievement for a man of his years.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I will raise what is a very serious issue for me and many others out there. We are fortunate that we had no fatalities on our roads on the back of Storm Debi over the weekend. I have no doubt that, if we had, I would not be the only one raising the issue of ash dieback in our roadside trees here this morning. It was through lucky fate that there were no fatalities. In my own area, a lot...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Apprenticeship Programmes (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I thank both Senators for their brevity. It is hard to share four minutes but they have done so excellently. The Minister is very welcome. He has four minutes.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Apprenticeship Programmes (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: The next Commencement matter is in the name of Senator Rebecca Moynihan, who is not here, so as the same Minister of State is responding, unless Senator Moynihan makes a last-minute arrival, Senator Clifford-Lee is next. I welcome the Minister of State. Senator Clifford-Lee has four minutes.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Court Accommodation (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Senator, let the Minister of State respond.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Family Reunification (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Before the Minister of State, Deputy Ossian Smyth, responds, I would like to welcome to the Gallery our special guests from the White House, Matthew McFarland and Kelsey Quackenbush. Fáilte romhaibh; you are very welcome. The Minister of State has four minutes to respond.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I welcome our guests this evening from both Teagasc and UCD. I am looking around at all the titles and am getting nervous because I would say the last time I sat before as many professors, it was probably a disciplinary matter during my own college days. They are bringing back bad memories but hopefully we can move on from that. We are all aware that we blessed as an island and as a sector...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Does Dr. Boland want to come in here?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I thank Dr. Boland. I will move on to Deputy Fitzmaurice. If Deputy Ring wants, he can get further clarification when he comes back.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Professor Pierce wants to come in. On the education piece and the connection between young school children and farming, the gap gets bigger all of the time. Professor O'Mara mentioned the fact that we all have a role to play in this. We have a very strong connection with the Irish Agricultural Science Teachers Association, IASTA. Its annual conference is at Lyons Farm on 18 November. That...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: We have to move on because the other witnesses are outside.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Does Professor O'Mara want to come in?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I will let Senator Lombard in now and maybe the witnesses can build in a response to Deputy Fitzmaurice in their replies to Senator Lombard. I am conscious that other witnesses are outside waiting to come in.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: I apologise, as Professor Boland got no airtime and he wanted to come in. I will give him one minute before moving to Senator Murphy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Paul Daly: Our colleagues are on their way back. I have one question while we are waiting. I meant to ask the representatives of UCD to comment on where we are in respect of a second veterinary school. How do the witnesses feel about it? While we are waiting for our colleagues to come back, they might like to comment on where that process is at the moment and how they feel about it.
