Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Statements (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: It did. I do not say it was just us because we are team in that sense. Sinn Féin has been proactive right from the get-go in addressing Brexit. We do not embrace it. I am not sure if Senator Feighan referred to that with regard to who canvassed for or supported the Remain side, but we canvassed to remain from the North also, and we used every influence that we had to ensure people...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: It is very useful for us to examine the Irish Banking Culture Board and know the individuals on it. We do not underestimate the challenge in trying to change culture in any organisation but particularly the banks which have been coming before the committee for several years. It reminds me of trying to shovel the snow while it is still snowing. There are many outstanding things that need to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: Does the board have much liaison with the vulture funds?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: I appreciate that and I definitely think that a gap exists. The ECB has instructed that the non-performing loans, NPLs, be reduced but not how it should be done. This committee always has tried to encourage the position that NPLs would not just be sold off but that banks would try to work with the customers to work things out. The witnesses have noted that members know a lot about this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: Another question is on why they are not obliged to pay tax on that, which is a conversation for another day. I know that the witnesses cannot comment on specific cases that are before the courts but my next query is relevant to Mr. Justice Hedigan's previous role. We have heard evidence from one group, which gave very strong evidence before this committee and subsequently supplied affidavits...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Irish Banking Culture Board: Discussion (1 Oct 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: So maybe in the course of the board's discussions with the banks it would encourage this as a way for the banks to demonstrate to us that they are really, truly genuine about changing the culture within the banking system, and that we will end up with a banking system that has integrity in it. I would appreciate that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: Senator Horkan should note that the difference between donations made to Sinn Féin and the Fianna Fáil Party is that donors to Sinn Féin do not benefit. In this case, the donor is deceased. In contrast, the beef tribunal proved there were direct correlations between the amounts of money given to Fianna Fáil and the decisions that were made.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: It is important to put that on record. If others would like to donate to Sinn Féin in their wills, we have very important work to do.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: I was addressing Senator Horkan. I know this is likely to keep him awake at night.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: I want to raise the important issue of valproate, which I have raised in the Chamber many times. Pregnant women were prescribed Epilim when people knew what its impacts were. The Minister promised us a report on this matter last March and we have still not received it from the relevant group. Will the Leader ask the Minister where that report is? Will he also ask him why the historical...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: Gabhaim buíochas leis an gCathaoirleach and I welcome everybody back to what may be the final term. In the midst of the chaos created by Boris Johnson, he must understand that Ireland will not be the collateral damage for his Brexiteer ambitions. As somebody who lived in Britain for a number of years, I would say that what happened there today is absolutely astonishing. It is also...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: What it really tells us is that we need to be in charge of our own destiny. We cannot leave the fate of our country and our State in the hands of people like Boris Johnson. If people do not see that and if we, as legislators and leaders in this country, do not see that, then we are failing the population. We need a united front to protect our livelihoods and in interests of the country and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: Excuse me but the Senator had nearly ten minutes. I am responding to what was said earlier. I am not going to sit here and listen to Fianna Fáil talk about putting the country first.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2019)

Rose Conway Walsh: -----are what are making people still suffer today. I spoke to a woman yesterday who was persecuted by vulture funds and by bankers.

Rose Conway Walsh: It has not gone away. This is what is impacting on people every day of the week.
