Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Costs of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: -----would be unconstitutional. It should be borne in mind that whiplash is the most common injury in car accidents. People should not be excluded. I detest how the motor insurance has held up whiplash victims of road traffic accidents as the main cause of the significant increases in insurance costs. It is not right and we should not feed into it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Costs of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I look forward to working with the Minister of State in the coming months to make a difference to this issue. I appreciate his work to date, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, in how many of our recommendations we can implement and in how quickly legislation can be introduced to make the changes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Rising Costs of Motor Insurance: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: It is also fraudulent to take money off somebody under false pretences. When the data are not there to back up the circumstances whereby companies are taking money off people, one can also turn it the other way around. I will conclude on that point. I look forward to working with the Minister of State in the coming months on the implementation of the process.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Ms Nicola Sturgeon (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh Chéad Aire na hAlban, Ms Nicola Sturgeon, go dtí an Seanad inniu. It is a great honour to welcome her to Ireland and this House on behalf of the Sinn Féin party. We welcome her as the leader of a nation with whom the Irish enjoy a long and enduring affinity as close neighbours and good friends. We share a strong Gaelic heritage,...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I support my colleague Senator Craughwell 100% on the need for a proper full and frank debate on the HPV vaccine. The experience he outlined is the same as the one I have had in my community where young girls are extremely unwell for no reason whatsoever after receiving the HPV vaccine. They are unable to participate in their education or fully in society. I want to have that debate in the...

Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2016: Second Stage (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank the Minister for being here. I want to raise one issue around the farm assist scheme. I welcome the income disregards that have been reintroduced regarding farm assist but the fact that farm assist applicants cannot, or could not, pay PRSI contributions has left many farmers with gaps in their contributory pension. In Mayo, some 50 farmers are affected by this. They had not...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of UK Referendum on Membership of the European Union on Irish Agrifood and Fisheries Sectors: Discussion (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank Mr. Cotter for his presentation and welcome Mr. Brennan. Does Bord Bia plan to promote the seaweed industry? The industry is growing and could create employment along the western seaboard. In 2012 as much as 25 million tonnes of seaweed was harvested as a food product and component of other products. What practical supports can Bord Bia give to people who are interested in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of UK Referendum on Membership of the European Union on Irish Agrifood and Fisheries Sectors: Discussion (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Besides Enterprise Ireland, does Bord Bia work with Údarás na Gaeltachta in respect of Gaeltacht areas?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of UK Referendum on Membership of the European Union on Irish Agrifood and Fisheries Sectors: Discussion (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Is there any possibility of an EU promotional fund for seaweed in the same way as there was for beef and lamb?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture Issues: Discussion (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. They certainly fill a gap in the farming community, which is why I asked the committee to include the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association in the discussions around all these issues. I agree with the way these issues are being tackled. In the context of the review of the Areas of Natural Constraint, ANC, scheme it is absolutely crucial...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Agriculture Issues: Discussion (29 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I am sorry about that.

Seanad: Presidential Voting Rights: Motion (30 Nov 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank the Minister for being present. I will not use any of my notes. I left Mayo at a very young age when I was forced to emigrate. I know what it is like to be one of the diaspora. I apologise for not being present earlier for the debate but I had to attend a very tragic funeral in Bray. I know what it was like to be forced to leave home in the first place and then what it was like...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2016: Second Stage (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I thank the Minister for presenting the Finance Bill to us. It has now been six weeks since the budget announcement and one week since the Finance Bill was passed by the Dáil, and the question of whose budget it was still remains. The twists and turns of Fianna Fáil would have political scientists scratching their heads. Initially, it claimed credit for a tax spend and cut ratio...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2016: Second Stage (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I wish to register our opposition to the Bill

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: The reality is that most of the SMEs that face these difficulties were ones connected to real estate. Does Mr. Blair accept that the fact that Mason Hayes & Curran only interviewed five businesses is totally unacceptable? In the process of what Ulster Bank is about to do, would that not happen? Five businesses out of that number will not give any true reflection. In fact, if one...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Did Mr. Blair think that five was sufficient to give a picture?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Can Mr. Blair comment on the number of just five being sufficient?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: Okay, so Mr. Blair is not giving his opinion on the five.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: I welcome the fact that the bank has committed to putting the 2,000 customers affected by the tracker mortgage debacle back onto to tracker mortgages by Christmas, or at the latest by early in the new year. The stress caused to customers in these cases contradict the line about the bank's integrity. To send out four letters stating the same things over a 12-month displays an arrogance and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Banking Sector in Ireland: Ulster Bank (1 Dec 2016)

Rose Conway Walsh: The arrears.
