Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I have some very quick questions. I thank Mr. Kelly for coming as well. Do Mr. Tubridy and Mr. Kelly accept that this looks to the public like a three-card trick? Do they accept that it looks to be a shady deal? They said here that much of it is down to RTÉ. On that basis, do they accept that this looks like a shady deal?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (11 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Is Mr. Tubridy sorry now that he did not stay on as an employee at RTÉ rather than go down the road of contracts? I have many more questions to ask, but I thank the witnesses for coming in.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Broadband Infrastructure (6 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am delighted this matter is being taken, and I want to thank the Acting Chair and the Minister of State, Deputy Smyth for coming in. I want to thank the Minister of State for the work he is doing on the national broadband plan. It is a very ambitious plan, and I know he is very enthusiastic about it. I want to acknowledge that, while I have a difficult situation here, there are broadband...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Broadband Infrastructure (6 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I thank the Minister of State for his comprehensive reply. I acknowledge that good work is happening in County Roscommon. The provision of €76 million for broadband is a significant development and we are all delighted about the schools. However, the owner of this business and his family have been told by NBI that it will take up to three years for the roll-out to come to their...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will touch on a few matters today, the first of which might not be popular with the public. In view of all that is going on in RTÉ and the terrible way in which some of the staff have been treated, staff who do a brilliant job, work very well and do outstanding reporting, and in light of the fact there is a crisis there at the moment, I urge the public to pay their television licence,...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I could not be here earlier today for personal reasons but I heard Geraldine O'Leary's comments earlier about the stress and mental health. From my perspective, I can see the pain on the faces of the witnesses last week and this week. I know they wish this had not happened. I would I hope that at all times when I ask questions, I am fair and upfront. I will start with Mr. Coveney. In...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Basically, Ryan Tubridy and Noel Kelly were not involved in this project.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. It was the idea of the two producers of “The Late Late Toy Show”.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. I just wanted to clarify that. With regard to the car issue, I am sorry to bring this up again and Mr. Lynch might deal with this as I do not want to bring everybody in on it because time is limited, from what I picked up when listening to the debate, Mr. Lynch stated today there was one secret car deal. Is he absolutely satisfied on that? Let us be truthful here....

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. It is not just one secret car deal. Mr. Lynch is obviously holding on that at the moment but there may be more. Am I correct in that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That information will come to us as quickly as possible.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I have a question for Mr. Lynch and Mr. Shortt. On the basis that Áine Lawlor, Mary Wilson, Darragh Maloney, George Lee and maybe one or two more employees of RTÉ have publicly stated their salaries, do the witnesses not think it would be a good idea for some of the rest to voluntarily give that information, given their colleagues have done it?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Would Mr. Lynch like them to consider it?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: In terms of the public view, I mixed with a lot of people over the weekend. People who have come out and made public their salary, because it is public money, are being well respected by the public. I have the same question for Mr. Shortt, although I do not want to labour it. He is a journalist himself.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Not Mr. Shortt personally.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: This is on the basis that Mr. Shortt's colleagues, George Lee, Bryan Dobson, Mary Wilson, Darragh Maloney and Áine Lawlor have voluntarily come out and said what is their salary. Would Mr. Shortt like to see more of his employee colleagues doing that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Okay. Again, in regard to what most people would see as the high rate of salaries, we would all be aware of the campaign by RTÉ to seek a licence fee increase and to seek more money. Do the witnesses not think it was extraordinary that RTÉ would still continue to pay this high level of salaries? The witnesses can make the assumption, or they may actually have said to us, that...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will just make a comment because I know the Chair is under pressure. I will go back to what I said last week and I do not expect any of the panel to answer this. The Minister with responsibility for communications in 2002 recently wrote an article in the Irish Daily Mail- I am going to differ with Moya a little on this - about 20 years ago. In that article - the witnesses can look it up...
