Noel Rock: The Garda Síochána use personally propelled vehicles of an electric nature called a Segway. I presume that the Department's view is that Segways are legal.

Noel Rock: They do. If a citizen were to ride a Segway on the streets, it would be illegal at present. Is that correct? Mr. Ray O'Leary:Again, currently if it is a mechanically propelled vehicle, it requires tax and insurance. It is not a question of a certain class of vehicle that is illegal; it is the use of vehicles in the absence of these and in the absence of clear standards.

Noel Rock: Given such vehicles cannot be given a vehicle registration number, they cannot be taxed and, therefore, that particular vehicle cited is illegal.
