Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Good Friday Agreement (21 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: It is vital for the people of Northern Ireland that power sharing be re-established. I am conscious that the DUP has asked for time and space to assess the framework. However, it has been indicated that it will be voting against an aspect of the Windsor Framework tomorrow and it also has been suggested that the DUP would not re-enter power sharing in Stormont. What can be done to alleviate...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Good Friday Agreement (21 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: The Windsor Framework is very much about Northern Ireland and, in putting it together, it is clear the views of many elected representatives and of those in business and society across Northern Ireland were taken on board. It offers hope of a new chapter in EU-UK relations. It would be valuable for everybody to have time and space to look at it and arrive at the most informed decision on...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Health Strategies (21 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: The Department of the Taoiseach has a lead role in advancing the well-being framework, which is aimed at ensuring budgetary funds are advanced not merely through purely economic measures but also through a range of things that are of value and are priorities for us, including educational attainment, biodiversity, the quality of housing and many other different values. A very significant...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: I thank the witnesses for their submissions and their answers. I was listening in earlier. I will focus on two brief points. In moving towards a low-carbon economy the commission is recommending the phasing out of fossil fuel subsidies. I am aware that the commission is looking at various options and alternatives there. This will put phenomenal pressure on people in some areas. I am...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: Before we move on from the issue of home heating, many people do not qualify for social welfare but they need their homes heated as well. To face into a €30,000, €40,000 or €50,000 conversion of the house is out of reach for many households, despite the grants. It is great to focus on those on lower income but there is a whole cohort of people who are not on social...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: The witnesses covered a lot of the areas in which I am particularly interested. One of the recommendations in the commission's report is on reducing fossil fuels subsidies. There are no alternatives in many different areas. It is difficult to see silage being done with an electric tractor, although it might be possible. It is difficult to see whether the fleet of lorries on the road would...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: I am conscious of the time. I have another question as well and I need to get the road hauliers' view on it as well.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: Maybe I could ask another short question instead of that answer.

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: I will forego that response. One of the areas where there is common ground is that in farming, you often work on your own. When you are on the road, you are often on your own. Public health, well-being and loneliness are major issues. Are there any views on what can be done to tackle this?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: Is there any view from the IFA in that regard?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Report of the Commission on Taxation and Welfare: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Mar 2023)

Aindrias Moynihan: There is huge opportunity there. We are talking about a couple of hundred euro for conversion of a heating system versus thousands to switch over to an underfloor heating system. I understand that much of the emphasis is to keep HVO for transport but there is real scope there and it would be very much worth looking at the possibility of using HVO.
