Committee on Public Petitions: Reform of Mental Health Services: Discussion (28 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: That is a nice way of explaining it. Mr. O'Sullivan has hit the nail on the head. Listening to that explanation, I understand that this complements the whole service across the board and makes it more attractive for counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists to stay in their practices. One of the biggest burdens I have seen in dealing with people for many years is that the cost of...

Committee on Public Petitions: Reform of Mental Health Services: Discussion (28 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: Yes. Revenue will regulate your tax. That is a banker. There is common sense. If Revenue is on you, it is on you and it is absolutely meticulous. That is your regulation. It should not be complicated at all. It has been said that it is complicated. It is not. You work within the Departments so you need to work between the professions, the health service and Revenue. That is it.

Committee on Public Petitions: Reform of Mental Health Services: Discussion (28 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: There is something I would like to put on the record. This whole discussion is here in this petition. As Mr. O'Sullivan noted in his opening statement, "What this petition asks is simply that the measures, already approved, be validated immediately so that the public may benefit from them at a time when the public health system cannot meet the demand for services." It is as simple as that....

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (28 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: No. We should agree the recommendations and see what comes back from the responses.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (28 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: No, Chair. I thank the secretariat and all the staff. We say this all the time but people do not see the amount of work that takes place in the background and the amount of abuse and parliamentary stuff that comes in. The amount of work done makes our job an awful lot easier and I thank the staff for all the work that they do as well.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Bus Services (21 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister of State for the response. I had a feeling that was what would come back but I wanted to raise this matter for the following reason. People are going on about the carbon footprint. For one thing, there is a carbon footprint in running 13 daily services from Youghal all the way to Cork city and all the way back. I understand many of these services do not run at peak...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Bus Services (21 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Collins, for taking the time to be here. This is an ongoing issue. There is a greenway from Midleton to Youghal which is nearly finished. The railway used to go down there. This is about connectivity. I submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister for Transport asking if the National Transport Authority, NTA, or Transport Infrastructure...

Energy (Windfall Gains in the Energy Sector) (Cap on Market Revenues) Bill 2023: Second Stage (21 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: I welcome the opportunity to speak on the Bill, but it is back to closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. The Bill is a bit late. Given the effect of energy poverty we in Sinn Féin have called for this windfall tax for a long time. I will give the Minister of State, Deputy Smyth, the story of a gentleman I know personally who went on radio and had no problem saying it....

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Accommodation for Travellers: Discussion (21 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: Good morning to all the witnesses. I thank them for coming before the committee. Sometimes people come to these committees and think they are on trial but these committees were designed to share information. Sometimes hard questions are asked but it is not a competition. The questions are asked to see how we as a committee can function to assist the witnesses. Their opening statements...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Accommodation for Travellers: Discussion (21 Sep 2023)

Pat Buckley: I will make one brief point, so the witnesses are aware of it. I know of Traveller families living in council houses. Do not get me wrong; they are delighted. The place is spotless and pristine. The problem is that some have large young families where there is autism and other issues. There does not seem to be an alternative. I know one family where the child is seven years of age. He...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Business of Joint Committee (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the clerk. I remind members of the constitutional requirement that they must be physically present within the confines of the place in which Parliament has chosen to sit, namely, Leinster House, in order to participate in public meetings. I will not permit a member to participate where he or she is not adhering to this constitutional requirement. Any member who attempts to...

Pat Buckley: I thank the Deputies. As there are no other nominations, I declare Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív elected Leas-Chathaoirleach. Is that agreed? Agreed. I congratulate Deputy Ó Cuív and will invite him to say a few words when he arrives in the committee room. Would any other members like to comment? No. We have a very subdued committee this morning. I propose we suspend...
