Gabrielle McFadden: Stop shouting at us.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Someone else suggested 5 p.m. or 5.15 p.m.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: That is four different finishing times now.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: This is farcical and ridiculous.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I also bang on about the same thing day in and day out. The Department has confirmed that it is willing to pay the increases with effect from 1 October.Unfortunately, the Department has also confirmed that it is unwilling to pay the arrears. This would be in connection with the adjudication on pay for cook technicians, Army rangers, account holders and recruits who must pay for their...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Foreign Affairs Council – Defence, and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Defence (18 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Paul Kehoe, and his officials for being here today. In his presentation, the Minister of State said that the organisation is making an invaluable contribution to international peace and security and conflict resolution. I do not doubt his pride and appreciate for the Defence Forces as it is always evident when I meet him face to face and in his dealings...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Foreign Affairs Council – Defence, and Related Matters: Minister of State at the Department of Defence (18 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I wish to raise the issue of people being charged to view rental accommodation. Threshold came out last week to talk about this and it wants something done to protect tenants.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Landlords are charging fees for tenants to view houses which are non-refundable-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: It varies. There were several examples given by Threshold in its report last week. One woman was charged a fee of €500-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: -----and if she was not in a position to pay that €500 then she would not be allowed to view the house. Threshold has stated this is becoming more common. The current demand on rental accommodation means that landlords can do what they like and people have no choice but to pay this if they want accommodation-----

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: -----and I believe that it is disgusting.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Another woman who was receiving the housing assistance payment, HAP, was asked for a €300 deposit to view a property. She could not provide the €300 but she would not get the €300 deposit back if she had viewed it and if the HAP payment was insufficient to cover the rent. That is outrageous.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Another man was asked for his personal public service, PPS, number, his passport, a confirmation of his employment, his employment history, his salary details and a fee of €150. It is absolutely disgusting. Landlords are filtering out potential tenants and it is not good enough. It is discrimination and something needs to be done about it. I ask the Leader to ask the Minister to...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Perhaps Athlone.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I was very upset to read in the newspapers over the weekend about a report from Focus Ireland on the growing number of young people leaving State care and becoming homeless. Many young people leave State care and transition successfully into independent living but it is not good enough that any child finds himself or herself homeless. Focus Ireland is calling for money to be ring-fenced for...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Sep 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I raise the plight of assistant psychologists. These people study for three years for their undergraduate degrees, and most of them pay approximately €10,000 to do their masters degrees. They then become assistant psychologists but they do not get paid work. To get paid work, they have to study for clinical doctorates but in to gain admission to the relevant course, they have to...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (26 Sep 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: Under Standing Order 62(3)(b) I request that the division be taken again other than by electronic means.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: To take up the previous speaker's point about the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, the Minister never said the bonus would not be paid. It is disingenuous for anyone to have said that.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2018)

Gabrielle McFadden: I am not saying Senator Nash did so. It had been leaked and that is where the problem lies. When things are leaked and taken out of context, people are terrorised and frightened. Old-age pensioners were fearful this morning because of a leaked document. It was fake news, basically, and I do not think that is right. I would like to speak on housing, as everybody would. Councillors,...
