Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: General Scheme of Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: (Resumed) Alcohol Research Group (12 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: Done through the pathway of alcohol.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: General Scheme of Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (10 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. They have presented us with startling figures regarding the impact on the health service. In that regard I want to follow up on a question asked by Deputy Mitchell O'Connor about the evidence base for their figures. As someone who is active on social media, I have seen comments that the RCPI or others are scaremongering to encourage us to...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I congratulate the ISPCC on its launch of the ISPCC shield yesterday. It has dedicated a month to an anti-bullying campaign and has produced an excellent toolkit for schools. The initiative has been launched on foot of the fact that 8,000 children rang Childline in 2014 because of their experience of bullying. The issue is not just prevalent in the workplace and is still very much...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I would like to speak on amendments No. 1 and 5, but I also wish to speak on the section. I listened to what the Minister of State and advocacy groups said. For me, this is about trust and confidence. I can see from the perspective of those involved in advocacy groups that trust has been shattered and confidence is low.The difficulty is I feel we are parsing words but what will it actually...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: It would be useful. Perhaps we are all saying the same thing but we are not all hearing the same thing. To echo the Senator's comments and Senator Ó Clochartaigh's proposal, perhaps we could have a brief gap of a few minutes between Committee and Report Stage to allow a comprehensive statement to be put on the record of the House. This is in preference to just having a statement that...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I want to hear it from the Minister of State in one clear statement.

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I also thank the Leader of the House with regard to Report Stage.I welcome the clarity provided the Minister before our pause and since we have resumed. It is important and it is what I was looking for, that we would have absolute clarity. There is an outstanding question from me in regard to the guidelines and the timeline that will come into place. I am not putting the Minister of State...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I will not repeat the debate we have had. I have a question on how our amendments involve a charge to the Exchequer. I think Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell mentioned it earlier in respect of the two amendments we had tabled given that we were told it did not have material difference. However, I will put that one aside. I do not know if this is the appropriate section under which to raise...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I welcome the Minister of State's commitment in respect of the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Bill. However, the cases I cited previously in the context of Magdalen women seeking to access disability and social services illustrate that they cannot access them. It is obvious, therefore, that they require the assistance of personal advocates. I am of the view that this section of the...

Seanad: Establishment of Electoral Commission: Motion (4 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I second the amendment. I reserve the right to speak later.

Seanad: Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (3 Mar 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I reiterate my full support for the Bill. One of the figures that stood with me as we went through the debate was the reference to the tobacco industry in Ireland needing 50 new smokers a day, almost 80% of whom are going to be under 18 years. It is great to see the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs bringing this Bill into law.

Jillian van Turnhout: Is Senator Cullinane pressing his amendment?

Jillian van Turnhout: Amendment No. 2 is in the names of Senators Cullinane, Ó Clochartaigh and Reilly. I propose that amendments Nos. 2 to 5, inclusive, are related and may be discussed together by agreement. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of National Rare Disease Plan 2014-18: Discussion (26 Feb 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I welcome all the witnesses. The fact that we have a day each year to focus gives this committee an opportunity to focus on the issue, although we have other encounters during the year. In preparing for today, I looked back at the meeting of 15 January when the Huntington's Disease Association of Ireland appeared before us and raised some very important issues, as the witnesses today have...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Second Stage (24 Feb 2015)

Jillian van Turnhout: I welcome the Minister of State. I am very encouraged by what all of my colleagues have said so far and hope the Committee Stage debate will prove fruitful. I stand in solidarity with Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell who so eloquently expressed her views on this matter. This is an issue about which I feel strongly and become quite emotional. Of course, it is an emotional subject and...
