Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: This Seanad should acknowledge the appointment of two Libyans living in this country to the Government of the new Libya-----

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: -----that is, Dr. Fatima Hamroush, an ophthalmologist based in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, to the position of health minister carrying all our expertise to Libya and also - I am very interested in this appointment - Fathi Akkari, a lecturer in the Institute of Technology Tallaght to a post in the education ministry. There is a great opportunity now for this country to forge...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I suggest to the Leader that he convey to the relevant Ministries the opportunities in Libya but I must add that it is a proud and joyful day for Libyan ex-patriots in this country.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I propose to the Government and the relevant authorities that the iconic new bridge spanning the River Boyne be named the Mary McAleese bridge. She has served this country as President for 14 extraordinary years and there would be no more fitting monument to her great work.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: The bridge will stand as a constant reminder of her great work and it will show the constant need to keep alive links between the two parts of this island. I also draw to the attention of the House that it would be the first monumental civic structure to be named after a lady. It is more than time that this be done in this country and in this State.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I ask the Leader to convey what I have said, and to consider this. I would be interested in the response. I thank the Cathaoirleach for his indulgence. I congratulate President Michael D. Higgins on his inauguration. I had to pinch myself to know I was there at the inauguration. The last time I did that was when Haggardstown Geraldines won the senior championship.

Seanad: Reform of Junior Certificate: Statements (8 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I wish to speak for five minutes and to share my time with Senator Healy Eames by agreement. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire go dtí an Teach. The Minister is very good at coming here. The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment commissioned the educational policy research centre of the Economic and Social Research Institute to carry out a study of student experiences of the curriculum...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall. I am somewhat disappointed that our embassy in the Vatican is to close. I have not been in the Villa Spada-----

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: -----but I hope that if it closes it will be only a temporary arrangement, given this country's links there. The Vatican is one of the oldest states in Europe and has made a great contribution to European civilisation including what it did for the preservation of democracy in France and Italy after the Second World War. If we cannot fund the Villa Spada we could have a more modest embassy....

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I realise that we will continue to have an embassy in Italy. We cannot have them both in the same place.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I ask the Leader to support the long-term continuation of our mission to the Vatican. The presence of a chargé d'affaires in Berlin did not stop the election of a German Pope. Therefore, I hope Diarmuid Martin will be the next Pope. I would like our mission to the Vatican to continue.

Seanad: Health Services: Statements, Questions and Answers (27 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I just received an e-mail; I do not know if any other Senator received the same. It states, "Jesus is back in Ireland". I do not know whether he is but the Minister is doing a good job in the health service. I understand his point about Louth Hospital, Dundalk, doing well. What about the trolleys in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda? We hear there are 40 patients on trolleys every day.

Seanad: Health Services: Statements, Questions and Answers (27 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: A great number of patients are on trolleys every day in the hospital in Drogheda. What is happening in that regard?

Seanad: Report by Interdepartmental Working Group on Mortgage Arrears: Statements (Resumed) (25 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I was impressed by his speech today and by his commitment to try to work to solve some of the problems with mortgage arrears. In this sense I welcome the Keane report as a first step in dealing with people who can afford no longer to pay their mortgages, such as those with sub-prime mortgages, and those who might benefit from the...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Empty vessels make the most noise.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I do and it is about the referendum. When I see that carbuncle, Mr. Michael McDowell, popping his head up again to say we are wrong, it makes me think we are doing the right thing.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: It is true.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Yes, I do. I welcome Senator David Cullinane's support for the proposal to amend the Constitution. In that spirit, I sympathise with him on the death of his great friend, Muammar Gaddafi.

Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Like other Members, I call for a full debate on the Keane report. This report is a good first step in dealing with the issue of mortgage arrears. It deals very well with the problem of those who cannot pay their mortgages, such as those who have sub-prime mortgages, and suggests ways they can keep their houses. However, it deals less well with those who are trying to pay their mortgages...

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Oct 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I join Senators MacSharry and Bacik in asking the Leader to provide an early debate on the Keane report. The report deals well with the matter of people who are no longer able to pay their mortgages. Its suggestions on mortgaging to rent and reforming bankruptcy laws are welcome. However, the Taoiseach stated in the Dáil last week that he would welcome further suggestions. We need a full...
