Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Narrow Water Bridge: Discussion (16 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: Are any of the other representatives making a contribution?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Narrow Water Bridge: Discussion (16 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: This is an important infrastructural project for the north Louth-south Down area and for the region in general. As Mr. Boylan outlined, it could have tremendous economic and tourism benefits for the area with the potential for 270 jobs. That would only be the tip of the iceberg because it would be like opening up a Brigadoon to the rest of the country and tourists from abroad. It is a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Narrow Water Bridge: Discussion (16 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I am so excited about this that I did not even notice.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Narrow Water Bridge: Discussion (16 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I was interrupted in what I was saying earlier by the vote which took place elsewhere. I fully support what Deputy Gerry Adams stated about the committee writing a letter. It should be sent to the Departments of the Taoiseach and Foreign Affairs and Trade rather than being sent directly to Mr. Sammy Wilson because it could antagonise certain people.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: What about telephone tapping?

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I am a little surprised at the uncharacteristically intemperate attacks on the Minister Justice and Equality and Defence, Deputy Shatter by the leader of the Opposition and others in the sense that he has been a frequent visitor to this House. On his last Bill, the Employment Equality Bill he played particular tribute to one of Fianna Fáil's Members, Senator Averil Power, on her...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I would say that he did not-----

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: Rumours were that my telephone was tapped for a long time and I did not like that.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: Some seven tonnes of toxic waste was seized yesterday by the customs and the Revenue Commissioners at a saving of €8 million to the State. Could the Leader ask all parties to be here tomorrow for the statements on diesel laundering by the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Hayes-----

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: -----and that all parties would stand up for the Revenue Commissioners?

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Unlicensed Money-Lending) Bill 2013: Second Stage (22 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: In common with all previous speakers I find reprehensible illegal moneylending and the pressure it puts on people. Similarly, what are called payday loans put people into terrible situations and whatever can be done to deal with this should be done. Senator MacSharry is a thoughtful politician all the time who presents his politics in a thoughtful way most of the time. However, he has...

Seanad: Diesel Laundering: Statements (23 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I welcome the Minister of State back to the House and acknowledge the great work he is doing to deal with this criminal activity, which is a national issue located on the Border. Anyone who thinks that laundered diesel is only sold in the Border counties misunderstands the position. While the plants may be located in or around Border counties in the main, there is a national distribution...

Seanad: Diesel Laundering: Statements (23 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: The Senator has an honest face.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: Like Senator Terry Brennan, I welcome the approval for construction of the Narrow Water bridge. both he and Senator Mary White have been great advocates for this project. I note in the submission on the bridge order that the mussel men of Kilkeel are looking for the bridge to be manned 24 hours a day. If we have no alternative employment at that stage, Senator Terry Brennan and I, and...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: The "Breach of Trust" programme broadcast by RTE last night as part of the "Prime Time Investigates" series showed a disgraceful and unacceptable level of abuse, intimidation and neglect of the children in the facilities concerned. We should bear in mind, however, that the vast majority of crèches are run professionally. The vital element is the system of inspection in force. In...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: The Minister is treating this issue with the utmost seriousness. While there are undoubtedly problems, I have full confidence that the Minister and her officials, working with the HSE, will tackle them. We must not tolerate a situation where conditions in a small minority of crèches are such that they could be considered to be the industrial schools or Magdalen laundries of the 21st...

Seanad: Special Educational Needs Services Provision: Motion (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I move amendment No. 1: To delete "'implement the recommendations in the NCSE report of May 2013, and in particular to ensure that his Department introduces a robust regulatory enrolment framework for schools to ensure that:'" and substitute the following: "'consider implementing the recommendations in the NCSE report of May 2013, and in particular to ensure that his Department introduces a...

Seanad: Special Educational Needs Services Provision: Motion (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: On a point of information, I was speaking about the policy, not the practice, when I said the policy-----

Seanad: Special Educational Needs Services Provision: Motion (29 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: In the interest of accuracy-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Cross-Border Student Access to Higher Education: Discussion (30 May 2013)

Jim D'Arcy: I welcome the witnesses from Letterkenny, Sligo and Dundalk. The contribution of the institutes of technology to education is phenomenal. I sat on the board of DKIT for nine years. Unfortunately, I had to leave it when I was appointed to the Seanad, but I am aware of the great work that is being done in DKIT. Are all the witnesses happy with today's report on the future of third level...
