Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (11 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State. It is very welcome that he engaged with the Department when he read the reply that was provided to him by the Department on Senator Currie's Commencement matter. It is extraordinary in this day and age that this situation has been allowed to continue.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (11 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: As Acting Chairperson, I thank the Minister of State for his time this morning. I know he is busy but we appreciate him being here.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: I also welcome Senator O'Hara to Leinster House. As somebody from a minority background, it is wonderful to have somebody here speaking on behalf of Northern Ireland. Senator Ó Donnghaile did a great job and Senator Currie certainly does a great job in that area so I suspect Senators O'Hara and Currie will have many conversations to benefit the people of Northern Ireland. I also...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: Ms Power and her team do enormous work in advocacy. The Irish Cancer Society is an important stakeholder. There is no doubt it has saved thousands of lives and given people quality of life. On the availability of updated data, we have had discussions in this committee over the years about computer systems. As regards access to data, for example, people who turn up at an emergency...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: From her engagement with advocacy groups in other countries where this data is readily available, is there anywhere Ms Power would point to as having best practice?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: There is a huge amount of work to be done in this area. I am conscious of time and I think someone else has to get in so I am finished.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: It is a question on behalf of our colleague, Senator Black, who is online but not in the precincts of Leinster House. She asked me to put a very simple question. There was a hearing of the disability matters committee on Monday dealing with the issue of self-advocates, access to equality of opportunity and so on. A lady by the name of Annette Costello gave evidence and made the point there...

Martin Conway: I will get Senator Black to make direct contact with Dr. Henry. I thank the Cathaoirleach.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Like many others I got up this morning not expecting the Taoiseach to announce his resignation. However, he did and I think it was a courageous thing to do. Many people leave politics because they are ordered out and the electorate does not support them. To realise that he has given his best and it is time to move on to do other things when he could have realistically remained as Taoiseach...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: We look forward to that. Mr. Gloster is expecting that there will be sign-off on those within the next week or so.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: That is what I am coming to next. It is disappointing. The word on the street is that the number of consultants in Limerick who have signed up to the new contract is lower than anywhere else in the country. Does Mr. Gloster think that unwillingness by consultants in Limerick to sign up to the new contract is having an effect on the operation and management of the emergency department at UHL?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Does the HSE have figures as to the number who have signed up to the new contract and who are based in UHL?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: It is very disappointing.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: This is the case although their colleagues throughout the country are signing up in their thousands to the new contract. The HSE can only do so much. I call on these consultants to sign up to the new contract. We are all in this together to try to improve things. Is there any possibility of sharing so some of the people who have signed up to the new contract in other hospitals could be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Clearly, it is having an effect in terms of the number of consultants that are available at weekends and at night.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Other hospitals have performed much better. We know that infrastructure and capacity are issues in Limerick, but the number of consultants is also an issue. The situation is very frustrating. It is to be hoped a GP will be in place to carry out triage in the next couple of weeks. Will that operate on a 24-hour basis?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)
