Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Catherine Noone: It is disappointing, to say the least, that the trade unions are recommending a "No" vote in the upcoming referendum. Workers are the ones who will benefit from the proposed measures included in the treaty. We must restore confidence in the country. The treaty has been designed to avoid the reckless spending that took place in the last ten to 15 years. It has been designed to promote an...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Catherine Noone: The days when money is flowing and there is cutting when there are difficulties must come to an end and keeping nothing in reserve is an idea we must avoid in the future. It is a clever gimmick to call this an austerity treaty; it could more properly be called an investment treaty because it will restore stability and confidence.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Catherine Noone: I join Senator Cáit Keane in asking for a debate on the official in the Department of Finance who attempted to bring matters to light that could potentially have saved us billions of euro. It is an outrage. I would welcome a debate on the topic in the near future. The suggestion an investigation take place before someone comes in to talk to us is a good one.

Seanad: Report of Tribunal of Inquiry into Certain Planning Matters and Payments: Statements (24 Apr 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank her for her efforts with regard to the tribunal report. I welcome the debate on and the findings of the Mahon tribunal. The last two decades of planning have shaken people's faith in politics to such a level that it will take a great deal of time to restore it. People's faith in politics and in the body politic, rather than any person,...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I want to briefly raise the issue of internships in this country. At the moment there is a lot of unemployment here and we should welcome internship programmes. Recently I carried out a survey on internship programmes and interns in different organisations and found that a large number of them feel undervalued. Jobs are also advertised but suddenly an internship with the same job...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Senators need to be as quick to point out the positive contributions and changes being made in the House as we are to point out the negatives. In fairness to the Leader, we have had a radical rearrangement of the way in which business is conducted, given the constraints we are under. I will single out no individual or party, but it is often the case that only two Members are present during...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Senator Walsh mentioned yesterday and I am merely responding to him.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I just want to make a general point. When we call for debates, we should be present when they are held. I welcome Fianna Fáil's support for the upcoming referendum. We need to work together on this issue. I am puzzled and concerned by certain Opposition posters' mention of water charges and other unrelated matters.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: It is outrageous. People have called it an austerity treaty, but we must get the point across that we are voting on a stability treaty. I would welcome a debate on the referendum.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Why did we sit last Friday and Monday?

Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: He can give it but he cannot take it.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I agree with Senator Quinn's comments on the fiscal treaty. The "No" campaigners are doing the canvassing for the "Yes" campaign. I was amazed to hear the stuff the "No" campaigners were coming out with on our national airwaves this morning. I welcome their voice and the air time they are getting because no right thinking individual in the country would go along with the la-la land stuff...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: They are not my words, they are the Senator's words.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the figures released by UPC at the end of last week, showing that more than 200,000 people per week are tuning in to the new political channel, UPC 801. It shows there is a significant appetite for unfiltered, unbiased information. It shows that people are engaging with politics, at least to some degree. Now, UPC has decided to move the channel UPC 801 to a channel in the 200s....

Seanad: Protection of Children's Health from Tobacco Smoke Bill 2012: Second Stage (9 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I congratulate Senators John Crown, Mark Daly and Jillian van Turnhout on introducing this Bill. It is a good idea that I firmly favour. I do not wish to repeat what other Senators have said, but the evidence, both in quality and volume, is clear that passive smoking poses an immediate danger to both adults and children. One aspect that concerned me during the public debate was the...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Charity hugging, or chugging.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I welcome the announcement yesterday that the rate of VAT on tourism products will remain at 9%. I have received feedback from the Restaurants Association of Ireland and employers in the industry throughout the city of Dublin that this announcement gives them certainty in planning prices and menus for the next year. It is to be welcomed and is helping employment in the industry. I support...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I am. I suggest we have a debate on our attitude in general to drinking and matters such as how young people dress. The need to clean up the city is not confined to O'Connell Street. I suggest we have a debate similar to the one we had on older people. We would not need to have a Minister present, but we should invite representatives of interested bodies, including Dublin City Council and...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: I am glad Senator Keane drew our attention to the Headstrong survey. This is an issue which I have raised regularly and I will not stop doing so until we make an impact. Headstrong surveyed 14,000 young people in this country and found that one in three had mental health problems. One fifth had considered self-harm and six out of ten were stressed about their financial situation. The...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2012)

Catherine Noone: Yes, we had a debate on low-cost selling of alcohol.
