Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I refer to a local issue in Letterkenny. I ask the Leader to bring the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government to the House to discuss the ongoing problem in Donegal and in the Letterkenny area in particular where several developers have left the scene and gone into receivership. There have been public meetings held regarding the issue of sewerage pumps in housing...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I would rather the Minister would come to the House to clarify the situation for us and give the residents some hope for the future.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I agree with most of what Senator Crown said. However, those of us who come to this House through the local government route have constituencies to which we relate as a consequence of having served the communities in question.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I take the point that, technically, we do not have constituencies, but people appreciate that we look after certain areas. I call for a debate on fish discards, an issue which is the subject of discussion throughout Europe. Members may be aware of a campaign that was initiated in the United Kingdom by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, presenter of "River Cottage" on Channel 4. According to his...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I am sure Sinn Féin could pick a Minister from the Stormont Assembly to explain why the £400 million allocated by the British Government to the Northern Ireland Executive for the A5 motorway is being spent on other projects. This project was mentioned in last week's review of the programme on capital expenditure. Roads investment has been halted for a period of five years according to the...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: The sliding tackles should be for tonight's match not today.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I ask the Sinn Féin Members, through the Leader, to arrange for one of their Ministers to explain why the £400 million allocated to the A5 will now be spent on projects which will benefit Sammy Wilson.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Yes, because Fianna Fáil did.

Seanad: Alcohol Pricing: Motion (16 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I resent Letterkenny being mentioned as having a drink problem.

Seanad: Planning Regulations (16 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Hayes, for coming to the House. He is a regular visitor and as somebody who was a Member of the House, he knows the format and the value of having a Minister or Minister of State replying to Senators' queries. My issue is local to Letterkenny, with a problem immediately affecting four estates. The ESB has written to the residents associations and...

Seanad: Planning Regulations (16 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: The question on the minds of the residents in the estates is: who will ultimately pay the ESB if the company decides next month to cut off the power because of non-payment? The amount is as yet unclear because there are different figures for different areas. Houses have been added and as such, the scale of the problem is unclear. Who will ultimately be responsible for paying the bill?

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I support Senator Whelan's proposals, and also those of Senator Conway on older people. Establishing a council for the status of older people would be a good move. As he stated, people are living longer and are healthier, but we need to facilitate them in the provision of services. I would like the leader of Fianna Fáil to come into the House to explain something to me. Senator Barrett...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I wish I was Minister for Education or Finance.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I call on the Leader to ask the leader of Fianna Fáil to come into House to explain to us new Senators how we reached this position.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Obviously, Deputy Martin has explained to the Senator what happened in the Cabinet and the Senator accepts it. If he comes and tells us the same, we might accept it.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: The next day what we will do is bring a photograph of the former Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, like the Senator's photograph of the Minister, Deputy Quinn.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I do not think Mr. Bertie Ahern ever told lies either, according to Fianna Fáil.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I am delighted that the Fianna Fáil Party has reached the stage where it thinks everything has happened since February. Recently I read a book in which Mr. Bryan Gould, the Labour Party stalwart, stated the Tory Party was a party which thought it had the right to govern. This has been shown to be an illusion; I can say the same about Fianna Fáil. It was all an illusion which has been exposed.
