Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I join Senator Bradford in calling for truth and reconciliation. He mentioned, in particular, the Pat Finucane case, which is very relevant today. I object to the Sinn Féin Senator's remark that European leaders are telling Ireland to jump. Sinn Féin, a 32-county, all-Ireland party, is the only party in Europe, or in a western democracy, that has different policies in different jurisdictions.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I call for a debate on the setting up of the truth and reconciliation facility. Sinn Féin, which jumps higher than the DUP in Northern Ireland when it comes to accepting cuts should not talk about a different policy here. It has sanctioned cuts worth €300 million-----

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: We do not have and the Senator will never have.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: My question is that-----

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: The truth has not gone away, you know: that is the expression. My question is whether the Leader will arrange a debate on the setting up of the truth and reconciliation facility. The people who are shouting most about truth and reconciliation in the press are those who-----

Seanad: Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister to the Upper House. He is a frequent visitor here, which is a credit to him, and he always provides information which is relevant to the day-to-day workings of the country. Whoever decided to proceed with this dormant accounts legislation was wise because a lot of old money was lying in banks which got their hands on the interest. When the Government introduced this...

Seanad: Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Did any of it come from the Northern Bank?

Seanad: Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I would repeat it anywhere.

Seanad: Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Yes.

Seanad: Dormant Accounts (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (12 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: It was a question.

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I thank Senator Leyden for pointing out the obvious. What went on for the past 14 years will not continue for the next four or five years. He can be sure of impartiality in that field.

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: With regard to the call for the Minister of State with responsibility for housing to attend the House to discuss Priory Hall in particular and cowboy builders in general, this problem is a product of the Celtic tiger. The taxpayer will pay the bill for Priory Hall and other similar building problems in every other county. I ask the Minister of State to contact every county manager and...

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I am asking that the Minister come into the House to discuss the issue and be called on to contact every county manager in the country to determine how immediate a problem this is.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Paul Kehoe. I wish to share time with Senator Landy and Senator Heffernan. They will have two minutes each. I will also give two minutes to the Opposition Members, so they can explain why Lifford barracks-----

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I thought I had eight minutes.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: If I had the time, I would get them to explain to the people of Cavan, some of whom are in the Gallery, why the Army barracks in Lifford was closed. I lived beside that barracks for eight years. They could also explain why the barracks in Letterkenny was closed and why the then Minister, Deputy Willie O'Dea, refused to come to Donegal to negotiate with or speak to any member of the Army or...

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: I am anxious to have an explanation of why Lifford and Letterkenny barracks were closed. They were integral parts of their communities for a long time but they are now derelict. Perhaps Senator Wilson will explain that. Second, I wish to remind Sinn Féin of something. I was living with my family next door to Lifford Army barracks in 1985 when the IRA set off a bomb in the street. It blew...

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Exactly.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: The military wing of Sinn Féin almost blew up the Army barracks in Lifford. I lived next door to the barracks and I remember it well. It is a pity the Senator is not my age, because she would have a different attitude towards her former colleagues, as I have.

Seanad: Army Barracks Closures: Motion (19 Oct 2011)

Jimmy Harte: Truth has not gone away, you know.
