Seanad: Care of the Elderly (23 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I accept the points the Minister makes, but I have one question. Would the Minister agree-----

Seanad: Care of the Elderly (23 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I ask him to bring this to the attention of the Minister of State. Is it feasible that the three-month period could be extended to 12 months in consideration of the patients there?

Seanad: Care of the Elderly (23 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I hope they will not be asked to move within three months although I agree that they would be moving to a modern and well-staffed facility. I believe these people need longer to get used to the idea that closure is taking place. These people are over 85 years of age and to ask them to move within three months is something of a shock at this stage.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I would like to add my comments to those of Senator O'Keeffe on the news that the Taoiseach and Tánaiste have conveyed to the Dáil that a referendum will take place - I presume it will be this year - on the fiscal compact. I hope that the debate will be reasoned and it will not be used by certain individuals for another agenda. It is probably the most important referendum in which this...

Seanad: Protection of Employees (Temporary Agency Work) Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: The Minister is welcome. I congratulate him on his work in attracting high-end jobs to the country which sends a signal to the rest of Europe and the world that Ireland is definitely open for business. It is heartening to hear job announcements in Dundalk and Cork. I hope in the next week or month an announcement will be made in Donegal by the Minister and IDA Ireland.

Seanad: Protection of Employees (Temporary Agency Work) Bill 2011: Second Stage (28 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: It is a long way from Donegal, but I wish Waterford well. I support the Bill. As an employer for over 25 years, I would seize a definite advantage and have used temporary workers on occasion. In my experience, the profile of the temporary or agency worker in the private and the public sector is different. Obviously, because of the moratorium on recruitment the HSE uses many temporary or...

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: As I said last week, Fianna Fáil Members are a little like a horse without its jockey in the Grand National - they are still running to the finish line, but no one is taking any notice.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I am not a betting man.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I acknowledge that.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I will pass on the Senator's kind remarks.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I endorse Senator John Whelan's comments on the household charge. There is a group encouraging people from the North, Britain, Germany, France, the United States and elsewhere to break the law in this country. I have never heard anyone in another country advising people from other jurisdictions to break the law in that country. It is probably symptomatic of the anti-everything campaign. I...

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I support Senator John Whelan's proposal that the Minister be invited to the House to explain why An Post has not been nominated to collect the household charge and whether the situation can be rectified. Householders have only four weeks left in which to pay the charge and An Post could assist in processing payments. On the issue of austerity-----

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: The reality is that Sinn Féin is the austerity party in Northern Ireland. It is leading a march on the other side of the Border.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Its new anthem should be "starvation once again".

Seanad: Action Plan for Jobs 2012: Statements, Questions and Answers (6 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I welcome the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation to the House. It is a coincidence that Donegal is currently hosting its enterprise and business week, an annual event organised by the Donegal County Enterprise Board. Donegal's local economy is typical of counties outside Dublin with a mix of tourism, agriculture and technology companies, all of which have the potential to be...

Seanad: Action Plan for Jobs 2012: Statements, Questions and Answers (6 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: That is okay. I welcome any action taken to provide jobs. In the first 12 months the Government has provided much support and innovation that will be helpful in the future. The Border counties are a special case because of the current gap with sterling. The exchange rate can move up and down by the day or week. Many businesses in Border areas are sensitive to fluctuations in sterling....

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: Senator Byrne reminds me of Waiting for Godot in which nothing happens, twice. That happened under the previous Administration. Schools were promised right, left and centre, but they never appeared. Five or six new buildings or extensions in County Donegal have been announced in the past three months. During the 15 or 20 years when children were in prefabs, nothing happened. Nothing...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: My question is as follows. The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has indicated that the household charge can be paid through post offices. I ask him to extend that to include payment of the non-principal private residence, NPPR, tax. Many people, especially from across the Border, come to Donegal and wonder where they can pay this. Some of them do not do it...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I am seeking an answer. We cannot get an answer.

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Mar 2012)

Jimmy Harte: I am asking that post offices should be allowed take payment for the NPPR tax. Perhaps Sinn Féin would clarify why it has no difficulty paying it in the North.
