Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Forthcoming Energy Council: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (24 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I agree with the Minister about the importance of energy security, energy efficiency, a fully integrated market and the benefits of this for this country. I have looked at something that could conserve significant energy in this country and reduce carbon emissions. It relates to the different motorways. Having entered and exited on a straight stretch of road, I saw 80 high-powered lighting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Forthcoming Energy Council: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (24 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: There are more.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: In the past couple of days, it was great to read that Ireland would benefit to the tune of €1.2 billion from 2015 to 2020 owing to an injection of EU Structural Funds. This funding will be used to promote research and development, investment and the competitiveness of the business sector. It will also be used to combat long-term and youth unemployment and social exclusion. It will...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I welcome the new agreement that was completed yesterday in Northern Ireland. The new deal will help stabilise power sharing and tackle the toxic legacy of paramilitarism. The agreement underlines this Government's commitment to peace, reconciliation and stability on this island. The Central Statistics Office figures issued yesterday indicate a 12% increase in employment in the Border...

Seanad: Services for People with Asthma: Motion (18 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: Ar dtús ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh an Aire. I, too, want to be associated with the compliments expressed to Senators Mary Ann O'Brien and Power on their motion and congratulate them. The motion is simple but it is on a condition that affects many people. As I am the last speaker, many of my figures have already been quoted. It has been estimated that nearly 450,000...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: ESB: Chairperson Designate (18 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I wish Ms Graham well in her new position. I am not the learned friend of my colleague here, but I spent in excess of 30 years in the ESB. The organisation has come a long way. In my young days it was a success to get somebody to sign up to take electricity supply for nothing - people for generations had done without electricity and they did not want it. We have come a long way. I would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: ESB: Chairperson Designate (18 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: It could respond on whether my proposition is feasible or not.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I raise the issue of the necessity to always keep liquid laundry detergent capsules away from children. This is a serious issue. Members may have read in the newspapers in the past fortnight of the quick reaction of a young mother from Dunleer in County Louth in taking her young child, who had access to laundry detergent and nearly died, to hospital. The mother took her child to Our Lady...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: They have too much to say. That is the trouble.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I do not want to steal Senator Mary Moran's thunder this afternoon but I want to congratulate Dundalk FC on winning the double, the FAI cup and league, on Sunday, the first time in 27 years. I congratulate all concerned. Since statistics began, 38,500 people have been killed on our roads, of which 23,700 were in the Republic and 14,700 in Northern Ireland. These are alarming and...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: As I speak, the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Paschal Donohoe, and the Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, are holding a consultation conference with sport stakeholders to develop a national sports policy framework. This is the first of its kind in more than 20 years and it is to be welcomed. Central Statistics Office figures released yesterday confirm a very strong...

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: Déanaim comhghairdeas leis an bhfoireann náisiúnta hockey and wish the players every success in qualifying for Rio next year. I welcome yesterday's Cabinet decision to establish an interdepartmental task force to examine the wide range of issues that have emerged regarding the treatment of workers on board Irish shipping vessels. The exploitation of workers must not be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I thank Mr. Slye for his deliberations here this morning. I welcome the change with Grid Link and Grid West and utilising the existing infrastructure. That is to be commended. We have an existing North-South infrastructure at the moment in time of 220 kV. I realise the difficulty with running a 440 kV cable underground and the expense of that. My question is as follows. We have a 220 kV...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: Why not do it? I am not happy that there are technological difficulties.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: It can be done.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: We are saving big money on Grid West and Grid Link. Why not put it into a complete underground project?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: Will the witness clarify if a 220 kV underground cable could be run underground to the 275 kV line in Northern Ireland in parallel with what we have at the moment? This would be 275 kV plus 200 kV which is 475 kV. The demand for electricity is reducing and I am sure it is the same situation in Northern Ireland, so has EirGrid looked at the 220 kV in parallel with the existing overhead?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I appreciate the difficulty with the 440 kV.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: Has EirGrid looked at the possibility of a 220 kV underground cable for the entire length or in phases of underground and overground? One would not have the difficulties that occur with different kV, and I appreciate those difficulties. I believe the possibility of a 220 kV should be looked at in parallel with the overhead that is there now. The two could be run in parallel.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Grid Link Project: EirGrid (4 Nov 2015)

Terry Brennan: I mean in the sense that parts of it would be underground and overhead in the non-sensitive areas, and that these can be combined. The option should be looked at before we are told it cannot be done.
