The children...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Peatlands Restoration and Rehabilitation: Discussion (23 Oct 2019)

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: Mr. Lucas stated some bogs are managed under the Living Bog programme. During Heritage Week in County Offaly, I visited a number of bogs in the programme. Six of the 12 bogs are in the county. It was a fascinating and informative afternoon. I do not know whether the committee has the time to visit, given all the work we have to do, but it would be interesting to visit some of the bogs....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I thank Professor FitzGerald for his presentation. Speaking as someone from Offaly in the midlands, where a third of our county is peat soil and has been used for harvesting turf for electricity generation for decades, the future of the peatlands is at the forefront of my mind. A certain amount of the boglands is being rehabilitated and restored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Climate Change and Land Use: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I thank all the witnesses for their contributions. I have a question about the IPCC and the awful scenes we saw of the forest fires in the Amazon and the horrendous damage being done there. That can be contrasted with the significant efforts we are now making here to tackle climate change. I think there has been broad acceptance in recent years that the climate is changing. We had a very...

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I thank everybody for their presentations here this afternoon on this very important work the committee is doing. I was very interested in Dr. Tierney's reference to young men and education. Does she have any suggestions on the types of programmes that might be attractive to them? I have come across some young men myself who were interested in farriery, yet there is not anywhere for them...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Traveller Mental Health: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Oct 2019)

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: May I ask a question I meant to ask earlier, if my colleagues do not mind? I was thinking about the men's shed model. It was stated that getting men to engage is a challenge. Has any work been done on determining whether a model such as the men's shed model could be useful in getting Traveller men to engage through some form of informal gathering? Many of them have many skills that they...

Financial Resolutions 2019 - Financial Resolution No. 9: General (Resumed) (10 Oct 2019)

Marcella Corcoran Kennedy: I welcome the opportunity to speak on budget 2020. For some time, Deputies have been aware of the Government's plan for a budget premised on a hard Brexit. There has been much criticism of this approach but I believe it reinforces that Fine Gael takes a prudent approach to the public finances. The twin themes of the budget, namely, Brexit and climate action, were well flagged in recent...
