Private Members' Business. Health Services: Motion (21 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Last Friday, the Minister for Health, Deputy Reilly, visited Sligo Regional Hospital, the HSE recruitment offices in Manorhamilton and Our Lady's Hospital, Manorhamilton. I regret I was not aware of that visit. It appears that the only people who knew of his visit were local Fine Gael representatives and, presumably, a photographer.

Private Members' Business. Health Services: Motion (21 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Possibly, although I cannot verify that. Had I known the Minister was visiting Sligo, I would have arranged for a number of groups to meet with him, including members of the Save our Cancer Services campaign, the Friends of St. John's Hospital who are fearful of further bed closures and the Friends of St. Patrick's Hospital in Carrick-on-Shannon who are fearful of further public bed closures...

Motor Vehicles (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (22 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: I am speaking on behalf of Deputy Dessie Ellis. The Bill implements increases in motor vehicle tax and trade plate licences and, as the Minister said, provides for some technical changes. After 1 January, flat rate increases in the different tax bands for private vehicles were imposed. The increases range from 7.5% in bands D and G, the worst bands in terms of emissions, to much higher...

Motor Vehicles (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (22 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: I thank the Minister. It was €2 a week. Today, he spoke about the annual tax increase of €13 a year, or 25 cent a week. The Irish Independent of Monday 30 January, following an investigation, pointed out that for the first time ever the cost of running the average family car had exceeded €100 per week. Where is the 25 cent per week there? That figure did not include depreciation....

Order of Business (28 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: When is the animal health and welfare Bill due?

State Assets: Motion (28 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: The selling off of State assets is a grave mistake on the part of the Government. At a time when the Irish people need job security and the public needs a belief that the Government is fighting to protect people's jobs, the Government decides it is time to rid itself of some of our finest resources. Irish forestry is just one area where there is much potential to develop jobs. This State...

State Assets: Motion (28 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Thank you, Minister. I hope that is on the record.

State Assets: Motion (28 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Both Labour and Fine Gael gave pre-election commitments not to sell off Coillte. Prior to entering Government, the Minister of State, Deputy Sherlock, said: Do we really want to end up in a situation where this for-profit company could turn around and do whatever it feels like with a natural resource that rightly belongs to the Irish people, including many of our forests, rivers and lakes?...

State Assets: Motion (28 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Is this how the Taoiseach, the Minister for Health and their Government colleagues regard Sligo Regional Hospital? We have already given away our youth and our sovereignty. This Government is now prepared to give away our State assets. When the troika comes knocking at the door once again, what else will the Government give them?

Written Answers — Long-Term Illness Scheme: Long-Term Illness Scheme (29 Feb 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Question 208: To ask the Minister for Health if he has plans to extend free general practitioner care to those who qualify under the long-term illness scheme. [11823/12]

Education (Amendment) Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (1 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: The Education (Amendment) Bill provides for several important changes to the Education Act 1998 and the Teaching Council Act 2001. Notably, it aims to ensure that all teachers in schools are registered with the Teaching Council and are fully qualified and suitable for the essential role they are expected to play in the education of our children. Any improvement that can be made to existing...

Education (Amendment) Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (1 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: I will proceed from what is in the Bill to what is not in the Bill but should be. There remains a serious gap in Irish education legislation not addressed in the Bill. This relates to the issue of how we handle allegations of abuse, bullying or emotional abuse of pupils by teachers. The Minister and the Department of Education and Skills profess that they are powerless to intervene in such...

Education (Amendment) Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (1 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: He is 16 and half years of age. He is desperately unhappy. He is not mixing with his peers. He spends all his time at home and has on occasion threatened to run away from home and worse. His parents are at their wits' end. They have spent the past two years of their lives trying to have this matter resolved. They have tried every avenue except civil legal action but always run into a...

Written Answers — Arts Facilities: Arts Facilities (6 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: Question 69: To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the position regarding the progress that has been made to date in securing properties under the control of the National Asset Management Agency that might be suitable for use as local arts facilities; if he will list these properties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12482/12]

Turbary Rights: Motion (Resumed) (7 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: I commend Deputy Flanagan on bringing forward the motion, the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association on its very detailed and excellent report and the people who travelled to Dublin today to protect their rights. No one is more concerned about the natural heritage of the Irish countryside than those who live in it. Rural people have been the guardians of this heritage despite the attack...

Sale of State Assets: Statements (8 Mar 2012)

Michael Colreavy: I had hoped to start by commending the Government on its handling of Private Members' business last night, because I thought it would set a precedent for a more co-operative way forward. Unfortunately, that promise was dashed this morning by the expulsion of Deputy Doherty for the crime of asking a question of great public interest and concern. The question here is not just about whether it...
