Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I wish to raise my concern about the state of health of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, GMIT, headquarters and campus in Galway. Ordinarily and over the past years I have received calls to raise issues about the GMIT campus in Castlebar, but I recently received disturbing information from a solid source that there are serious financial, management and governance problems there. Some of...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I welcome the report of the independent auditor, Peter Smyth, which gives a clean bill of health to our national broadband plan and processes. It is now imperative we drive on to see delivery of high-speed broadband on the ground. What we are attempting here is unprecedented in terms of State intervention to ensure that all households have access to high-speed broadband. I ask that the new...

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: When the Bill was before the Seanad, the debate ended prematurely and I did not have the opportunity to speak. I wish to speak against the Bill. This is pertinent to section 11. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Coveney, addressed the House on the Bill and I support the position he expressed. He is genuine in his ambition to contribute to peace in the Middle East.

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I will try. The Bill is not lawful. International trade is an exclusive competence of the European Union. Ultimately, although it may be well intentioned, the Bill is futile. Further, the Minister described how the passing of the Bill would hinder his work for peace. He stated that Irish action of this nature would isolate and marginalise Ireland's voice and influence on the question of...

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: -----through the actions of Arabs and Jews, not outsiders. As outsiders, the facilitation of that conversation should be our focus. Have we not learned from what happened in the North of our country? The Bill could negatively impact on the channels of communication and trust between the Minister, the Government and Israel.A number of people today might feel better if this Bill is passed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2018: Motion (27 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: It is clear that there is a serious commitment to the sector through the €84 million in the most recent budget for the annual Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund. When we put in money we support rural development and sustainability and I would like it to be rolled out to Ballinrobe and Kilbeggan because it makes a difference to those communities. I also have concerns, which have been put...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I refer to the issue of the unsustainable prices being paid to beef farmers and how that impacts on the work of Bord Bia, particularly in the context of the Food Wise 2025 targets. In recent weeks, the price that farmers are getting from the factories is down 30 cent per kilo. Farmers were getting €4.05 last year but are only getting €3.75 now and I believe the price has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: We could have quite an extensive conversation on this but I asked Mr. Brennan how the meat factories have been challenged by authorities here. Bord Bia is getting them a lot of business and they are very profitable but the primary producer in the food supply chain is not even breaking even. As Mr. Brennan said, this speaks to viability or non-viability. What is Bord Bia doing? It is...

Michelle Mulherin: -----but if it has nothing to sell it will be defunct. How are the factories being challenged?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: When Bord Bia speaks with the processors seeking to sell abroad does it not ask about giving the farmers a fair price? Mr. Brennan is not answering the question. It is a difficult question because it is not an easy issue to solve.
