Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's TB Eradication Programme: Discussion (11 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I apologise for my absence but I had to attend a vote in the Seanad. I hope I do not repeat questions that have already been asked. On a lighter note, Mr. Sheahan said he hoped that TB would be eradicated by 2030. That comments strikes me as a positive one. I am a member of the climate action committee, as are a number of my colleagues, and we would love to be able to say the same thing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Teagasc 2017 Annual Report: Discussion (11 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I welcome Professor Boyle. He described some collaborations with the education sector through institutes of technology and University College Dublin. Is there a defined role for Teagasc in the development of technological universities? To what extent has Teagasc been consulted? Would its participation be more on an ad hocbasis, depending on the particular alliance of colleges involved?...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Teagasc 2017 Annual Report: Discussion (11 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: Is that at the Galway campus or Mountbellew?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: Ireland's national policy position on climate change is a reduction of at least 80% compared with our 1990 levels of emissions across the energy, built environment and transport sectors, as well as an approach to carbon neutrality in agriculture and land use, by 2050. Can the Minister explain what an approach to carbon neutrality in agriculture means? What pathway does he envision for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I am sorry but there is a division in the Seanad on the Finance Bill. I must go.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: Yes, that is probably best as it will be at least ten minutes. Is that okay with the Minister? I have a few more questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I was banging the gates of heaven and could not get in.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: I know the Minister referred to Teagasc and the definition of approaching carbon neutrality. Did he answer what pathway he sees for agriculture towards carbon neutrality by 2050? How will that work? It is fair to say that agriculture has been singled out for particular criticism for carbon emissions, and we need only look at the Citizens' Assembly. We all know, however, that we are the...

Michelle Mulherin: I want to make a point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Dec 2018)

Michelle Mulherin: Under Mercosur as we speak, we are bringing in beef from Argentina to the EU. I dare say it is not at the races compared with us when it comes to carbon efficiency. It seems ridiculous, if our true aim is to reduce carbon emissions, to give no recognition to the people who have done so. There is a fundamental flaw in the compliance regime.
