Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the Minister to the House. I hope he will be able to visit Kildare for the official opening of the Sallins bypass, a project about which I spoke to a couple of his predecessors, namely, the Taoiseach, Deputy Varadkar, and the Minister for Finance, Deputy Donohoe. I would be delighted to welcome the Minister, Deputy Ross, to the opening of the bypass. It will almost coincide with...

Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: It is a shovel-ready project and the Minister looks at those in a positive light. The RDS in Dublin is a multisport facility. Not alone would it be for rugby but it would also be for hockey, which is proving very successful currently, as well as equine sports. I hope the Minister will examine that project as well.

Seanad: Transport and Sport: Statements (20 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: They may lobby on behalf of it so that is part of the process.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I want to comment on the contribution of Senator Ned O'Sullivan. As a sportsman, I reiterate that it is more important to play the ball rather than the man. I have been the subject of a personal attack from one of the Senator's colleagues here, so I would concur with the fact we need to be more proactive on how we debate. We need to learn how to debate properly, rather than making it...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: There was the group certificate before that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I have before me a sample junior certificate higher level Irish examination paper. I met a group of Irish teachers this morning. Some of the language in the questions is beyond the scope of the young children who will sit the Irish higher level paper. I tested the paper on a couple of capable students who will do their junior certificate next June.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: Sadly, my Irish is very limited, partly because of the education system in place at the time which emphasised rote learning rather than learning oral Irish. The sad reflection of where we are going with the changes in the junior certificate-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: The sad thing about the new junior certificate Irish syllabus is that the written paper will account for 90% of a student's overall mark, with 10% being accounted for by continuous assessment. Previously, schools were given an option of 40% of the marks being allocated to an oral exam. The Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy McHugh, is very enthusiastic about oral exams because he...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: The new one.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: It does not matter. We need to get back to where we ought to be, namely, teaching oral rather than written Irish. I ask the Leader to request that the Minister come before the House to see if he can sort out that problem. He did very well in respect of the problem with history. This is another little task we have for him.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: Laois or Tipperary.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: As somebody who remembers Baldoyle and the Phoenix Park, I would hate to see the loss of a race track from the Dublin area.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I thank the witnesses for their attendance. I listened to their opening remarks on my iPhone. I welcome that Mr. Hartery highlighted that the Irish Equine Centre in Johnstown is HRI's first priority. Having been there with Mr. Kavanagh on several occasions as well as with the Minister, I know that it needs considerable investment. We hope that will happen. It is operating on a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: There is scope to increase participation. Many people are looking for things to do, particularly at weekends. If we could encourage them into racing not so much on the gambling side but as an overall package, it would be very positive.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I was specifically referring to Dundalk.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: That is a huge message that we have to get out there.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Operational Matters and Corporate Plans of Horse Racing Ireland: Discussion (19 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: As Mr. Kavanagh highlighted, if there were 600 jobs in a factory coming to Bagenalstown, the Chairman would be all over it. The jobs are there already, and the additional horses Willie Mullins or Jim Bolger get bring in other staff as well.

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (13 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I will support this excellent motion. My colleague spoke to the fact that this Government is the first to appoint a Minister of State with specific responsibility for people with disabilities. Although we are discussing eye clinic liaison officers and expanding the pilot scheme set up in the Ireland East hospital group, we must recognise the funding he has allocated for people with other...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Affecting the Quality of Water: Discussion (5 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: I have little or no faith in the EPA following a previous incident in Kerdiffstown about which it had been warned on numerous occasions and that has since cost the State €21 million. A certain amount of cryptosporidium will be in the water, having come from the plant, because it is not possible to get rid of it all. Is the EPA satisfied with the range of levels of contamination that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Affecting the Quality of Water: Discussion (5 Nov 2019)

Anthony Lawlor: Does the EPA audit when something happens or does it do so regularly?
