Order of Business (28 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: It is no problem, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle. I want to wish everyone who is retiring this year the best of luck. In particular, I want to congratulate you, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, and your family. The Kitt family is very much ingrained in Dublin South-Central. We know your extended family on a personal basis. It is a great honour to the Kitt name that Fr. Kitt Court in Crumlin was...

Order of Business (28 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: As I have said, I know some of the Kitt family personally.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Year of Development: Discussion (27 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: I apologise. I did try to get permission to stay but I was not allowed. The vote was of interest because I did not know it was coming up today. It related to the agreement between Europe and Central America. I wanted to hear the witnesses response to the question of European agreements with those other blocs if you have two minutes to spare, Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Year of Development: Discussion (27 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: -----in favour of the agreements the EU has negotiated with Colombia and Peru, for example, and Central America, as we just voted on a few minutes ago. TTIP is a different ballgame, it is not a negotiated agreement yet. It is still in the throes of discussions and the others have been agreed and ratified by 28 countries in Europe.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Year of Development: Discussion (27 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: I thank the witnesses and welcome them. We addressed climate change several weeks ago when witnesses, including Professor Sweeney, came before the committee. It was a very interesting meeting. We had an in-depth presentation on the consequences of gas emissions, the targets we are setting and the obligations on Ireland as a State to comply in the very tricky areas of grassland, cattle and...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: EU Framework Agreement: Motion (26 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: I appreciate that this is not the first time we have dealt with a trade agreement such as this and the more I study such agreements, the more I favour them. It makes me feel proud that, as Europeans, we support emerging democracies and provide substantial development aid to assist them in key areas such as the protection of human rights, the rule of law and democracy. I note that we are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Reform Negotiations: Discussion (20 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: I do not know whether I am being artificially lulled into a sense of optimism. My memory of the British Prime Minister's attempts to renegotiate treaties was of a very virulent, hard-hitting and destructive campaign as a reaction to the growth of UKIP in the early days. Today we are hearing more about Mr. Cameron's position that he vigorously campaigned to remain in Europe. The Minister of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: COP21: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Jan 2016)

Eric Byrne: I thank the delegates for their contributions, which were detailed and in many ways scary. Are we going to meet these heavy demands? For example, will we be able to phase out fracking and oil and gas exploration? One hears people arguing that we need to bring in as much oil as we can. The Government is attacked for not issuing enough exploration licences. It is ironic that when Dublin...

Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: EU Framework Agreement: Motion (16 Dec 2015)

Eric Byrne: At the outset, I should state Vietnam is one of my most favoured countries. I am so impressed by it that I have not merely gone on official visits but also have spent four weeks on holidays in Vietnam north and south. They are the finest and most beautiful of people with the most beautiful food and the most fantastic production of seafood and fish farming. What is fascinating about Vietnam...
