Seanad: Pharmaceutical Pricing: Statements (4 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Common courtesy is a virtue which is easily expressed.

Seanad: Schools Building Projects (6 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit go dtí an Teach inniu. I call on the Minister for Education and Science to examine the Finn Valley college issue. The Stranorlar technical school, which was built in 1939 and opened in 1940, is the oldest County Donegal Vocational Educational Committee school today. On 5 April 2007, Stranorlar technical school officially changed its name and is now...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Ba mhaith liomsa, cosúil le mo chomhgleacaithe, go háirithe an Seanadóir Ó Murchú, tacaíocht a thabhairt don mhéid atá ráite acu maidir le cheist na Gaeilge anseo i dTithe an Oireachtais. Tá sé tábhachtach go mbeidh muid mar Baill den Oireachtas in ann an Ghaeilge a labhairt agus í a chur chun tosach. Tá súil agam gur féidir moltaí den chineál sin a fhorbairt agus deis a...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: It is vital that Ireland grasps the opportunity and that the Minister tackles the officials responsible for us to grasp the opportunity to bring teams to train here. This week, I was in touch with some of the Irish Olympic team athletes, who are currently training in Valencia in Spain. They contacted me because I gave them brochures. The Olympic team manager, Patsy McGonagle, travelled to...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I apologise. When the proclamation was written, the reference to cherishing all of our children equally did not refer solely to those in socially disadvantaged areas. It gave equal strength and meaning to our Northern Protestant community and it is heartening that those words are still very much alive and that the peace process is bringing about the dividends and bringing the religions in...

Seanad: Physical Education Facilities (20 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I wish to share time with Senator Doherty.

Seanad: Physical Education Facilities (20 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Tá mé féin agus mo chomhghleacaí, an tSeanadóir Ó Dochairtaigh, ag tógáil an ábhar seo maidir le halla spóirt a chur ar fáil do Phobalscoil Gaoth Dobhair. Bunaíodh an scoil i 1973 nuair a cónascadh Ard Scoil Mhuire i Machaire Chlochair agus an ghairmscoil i Sráth na Corcra. Bhí an phobalscoil á reachtáil idir an dhá fhoirgneamh go 1980 nuair a tógadh scoil úr ar shuíomh...

Seanad: Physical Education Facilities (20 Mar 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I share Senator Doherty's concern that the final go-ahead for construction appears to be in question. I ask the Minister to use his good offices to convey our concerns to the Minister for Education and Science, Deputy Hanafin. I will also raise the matter on a personal basis with the Minister in the near future.

Seanad: Calafoirt agus Céanna (8 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur roimh an Aire, an Teachta Ó Cuív, go dtí an Teach chun freagra a thabhairt dom ar an tábhar seo, a d'ardaigh mé ar dtús sa Teach ar 11 Nollaig 2007. Ó shin ar aghaidh, bhí coiste forbartha Inis Bó Finne, iascairí na hoileáin — go háirithe — agus lucht cónaithe na hoileáin i dteagmháil liom roinnt uaireanta maidir leis an fhorbairt atá...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: He did.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Let me begin where Senator Regan finished.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: The man referred to by Senator Regan is our Taoiseach and leader of the Fianna Fáil Party. He is the man most responsible for bringing about the Good Friday Agreement. Ten years ago history was made on this island. Now, people from all strands of society can unite in the North of Ireland. Today is a momentous day. People such as John Hume, Senator George Mitchell, General John de...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: This is a matter for the Order of Business. This House should recognise this major achievement that rightly should be celebrated today and is being celebrated north of the Border. The Taoiseach stated earlier today: "I hope and pray that everyone on this island will forever live in the light that was illuminated on this day ten years ago." Those words are very true and are reflective of...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I want now to speak about the Olympic Games and the ongoing debate in respect of the protests that have occurred over recent days and weeks. This matter has been referred to by a number of Senators in recent days and rightly so. I did not have an opportunity to speak on the matter yesterday. I agree with the sentiments expressed by all Senators in recent days. It is regrettable the Olympic...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Protestors are wrong to suggest athletes should not travel and represent their nations.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: The protestors have called on them not to travel.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I agree with the sentiments of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Dermot Ahern, that we should look at this situation as we do the situation in Northern Ireland. If athletes boycott the opening ceremony, that is a different issue. It is, perhaps, an issue that should be explored by the different Olympic councils.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: The International Olympic Council meets tomorrow to examine the matter. I agree with the sentiments of the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Mr. Pat Hickey, who stated that Irish athletes will not boycott the games. They have trained hard to achieve the qualifying standard and should represent their country at the games. I know everyone in this House will echo those words. I...

Seanad: National Skills Strategy: Statements (22 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: Go raibh maith agat. Ba mhaith liom glacadh leis an deis seo fáilte a chur roimh an Aire Stáit, an Teachta Haughey, go dtí an Teach inniu chun an national skills strategy a phlé. I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science, Deputy Seán Haughey to the House. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the important issue of the national skills strategy. The...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2008)

Brian Ó Domhnaill: I wish to raise the issue of applications for admission to the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers, IPAV, in Ireland. I am not sure which Department has overall responsibility in this area——
