Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The Chairman made a point about the Cherrywood apartments. I said there are no builders building in the town at the moment. Let us suppose a builder looks at a site in Dublin city today. The major problem is that whoever owns it wants a given amount of money for it. Much of the Cherrywood land we talked about earlier was bought for peanuts from NAMA at an early stage.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration and Housing (Amendment) Bill 2018: Discussion (28 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: Yes, but if I could buy for €27,000 per unit, I could happily build all the apartments anyone wants.

Beef Sector: Motion (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I also welcome the motion and the debate is needed. As the Minister and many people in the Gallery will know, I have been perceived to be anti-farmer at times, which I vehemently deny. I have been very critical of Government policy, which has led to many problems for farmers. I believe we are overproducing. I believe the emissions from the dairy and beef herd are an issue. Increasing the...

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: It is an economic crisis, not a humanitarian crisis. There is a humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: My question is related to the situation in Venezuela. It is incredibly significant and could be a real game changer in world politics. The Irish Government and the European Union have the potential to play a positive role. I appeal to the Government to start that role in a positive way. It was a big mistake for it and the European Union to support the unelected Juan Guaidó, who is a...

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I may be. I re-echo Deputy Boyd Barrett's comments about the Taoiseach's attack on Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party and the notion of anti-Semitism. It is the height of inaccurate populism on the Taoiseach's part. It is totally inaccurate and he could serve himself better. The Government's decision and the decision of 23 governments of the EU to recognise Guaidó as the interim...

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The pigs are listening.

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Greenhouse Gas Emissions (27 Mar 2019)

[14247/19]

[14248/19]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017 (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I thank the witnesses for their contributions. This is a complex matter. As legislators, we have to be careful because, while it is our duty to legislate, it is also our duty to do less harm than good. My gut feeling is that stand-alone legislation will give more clarity to families and better guidelines for judges so the only question is if it is merited that we legislate. That is about it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Scrutiny of the Civil Liability (Amendment) (Prevention of Benefits from Homicide) Bill 2017 (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: No, that is fine. I thank Professor Mee very much.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The US sanctions on financial transactions are an issue, but one can get around them. Between March 2018 and March 2019 we sold them approximately €140 million worth of goods. How was it managed? It can be done and if there is a will, there is a way. It is not just down to the regulations either. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has an issue in that it does not want to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: 59. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he or his officials have had discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or with Iranian officials regarding the possible resumption of exports of beef and lamb to Iran; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13956/19]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: Have the Minister or his officials had any discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or spoken to Iranian representatives with a view to reopening markets for beef and lamb sales? As has been discussed here at length, there is more beef in cold storage plants currently than we would like and not selling it to the likes of the Iranians does not make a great deal of sense.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I realise that Iran is buying a great deal of meat from Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, as well as from Romania. It is buying a lot of meat from Romania. Only recently, the Iranians purchased 50,000 lamb carcasses. In 2018, they imported 160,000 tonnes of meat. It is a huge market which would like to trade with us. They have made it very obvious that they want to do business with us....

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Brexit Issues (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: 90. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his views on whether Brexit is an opportunity to commence the diversification of the agriculture sector here away from the concentration on beef and dairy production; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13957/19]

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Vacant Sites Data (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: 1401. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the number of vacant site levy implementation progress reports received from local authorities to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13376/19]
