Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Experiences of Migrant Communities Engaging with the Healthcare System and State Bodies: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Dec 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for coming before us. I acknowledge the work they do, and very difficult work it must be. I am sure I speak for the Vice Chairman and all of the other members of this committee when I say we will be only too happy to offer any support and assistance that we are able to give. I have a number of questions of a general nature. The first concerns the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Enterprise Support Services (30 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State and the Senator.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by An Taoiseach (18 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Taoiseach. I am delighted to see the Taoiseach here to address us. This is important and we appreciate it. No better man than the Taoiseach to be here because, of all the party leaders, he was the only one in these buildings who stood by the Seanad when it was fighting for survival. I thank him for that. It is Deputy Micheál Martin's fate, and ours, that...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Leader may have read last week a statement issued by Professor John Ryan, a consultant in the hepatology department of Beaumont Hospital, in which he stated that the incidence of people presenting with liver disease at the hospital had increased by 30% since the first lockdown. He attributed this, and was clearly right, to the increased consumption of alcohol in the home during the...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) (Large-scale Residential Development) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (16 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: The amendment has been well debated.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Psychiatry Services (10 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: It is lovely to see the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, in the House. It would be remiss of me not to welcome you.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I would like to be associated with the kind remarks that Members have expressed for our old colleague, Senator David Norris. I have had the privilege of serving in this House with him for 14 years and I have been most impressed by him at all times. It is nice to see him being recognised in his own lifetime. I came into the Chamber especially to join in the condolences to the great Austin...

Seanad: Safe Access to Termination of Pregnancy Services Bill 2021: Second Stage (10 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: This a very important debate and I commend Senator Gavan, his colleagues and the other signatories to the motion. There is something déjà vu-like about speaking immediately after Senator Mullen and disagreeing with him. I do not know if I have the stomach for much more of this at my age because I tend to agree with the Senator on virtually every other standpoint that we share....

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Public Transport (3 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister for Transport.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Research and Development (3 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Deputy Harris, to the House.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Technological Universities (3 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Senator Cummins will not mind me coming in on this but as a former vice chairman of County Kerry vocational educational committee, VEC, as it was, it would be remiss of me not to compliment the Minister on his work in bringing to fruition our Munster Technological University. He has a very happy event coming up on Monday. It is a consummation joyful to behold and the Minister has played a...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Yes. I am in my office. I thank the two witnesses for the brevity and clarity of their responses. I have a few questions. I have to admit that, as a layman, I did not realise the enormity of the powers of the GDPR. It makes me wonder whether the GDPR legislation obviates the need for any legislation by this Parliament at all. On that question, are the general views the two witnesses...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Would the witnesses say further that, where the GDPR comes into play, the Government should not or does not need to legislate? Do they believe this legislation is totally superfluous? Is it of any value?

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Yes, I got that point. I have a few other brief questions. I am a bit puzzled. Heads 38 and 39 deal with restrictions on the right to compensation. In his document, Dr. Logue says that this is "fundamentally incompatible with GDPR". I cannot understand why GDPR should apply in respect of restrictions on rights to compensation. Surely someone has to cap people's rights to compensation....

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have one other quick question.

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: General Scheme of the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (2 Nov 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Minister said that the legislation is to guarantee the release of information that might not be subject to full release under the GDPR where there might be mixed personal data involved. My colleague, Senator McGreehan, has already mentioned this. Who is going to guarantee the rights and freedoms of others and other points of view the witnesses may not represent?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Oct 2021)

Ned O'Sullivan: Everybody from my generation will be familiar with this beautiful poem written by Máire Mhac an tSaoi, who sadly passed away at the weekend: Le coinnle na n-aingeal tá an spéir amuigh breactha, Tá fiacail an tseaca sa ghaoith on gcnoc, Adaigh an tine is téir chun an leapan, Luífidh Mac Dé ins an tigh seo anocht. She was one of the outstanding poets...
