Seanad: Conflict in Yemen: Motion (19 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister of State. I also welcome the motion, which Fianna Fáil was happy to sign. I compliment Senator Higgins on taking the initiative to table the motion. It has given the Seanad an opportunity to raise its voice in respect of this significant humanitarian tragedy. Perhaps we might be able to lead by example and encourage others to be of practical assistance in that...

Seanad: Local Government Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Senator has made a very good point.

Seanad: Local Government Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: That is not very convincing.

Seanad: Local Government Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Minister of State is grasping at straws now to drag this out.

Seanad: Social Welfare, Pensions and Civil Registration Bill 2018: Second Stage (6 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank Senator. She spoke for exactly eight minutes.

Seanad: Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018: Second Stage (6 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I could say much more, but I will just use the four minutes available to me. I thank our party Seanad Leader, Senator Ardagh, for generously sharing her time with us. There is an old Irish proverb, "is binn béal ina thost"; sometimes one can say too much. This topic has been debated ad infinitumover decades and in more recent time in the Oireachtas committee, of which I was glad to be...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: That is an improvement on seagulls. I have no wish to lock horns with Senator Mullen, especially as we will have adequate opportunity to do that in coming days. I cannot, however, let his comment go unanswered. Senator Mullen posits an opinion that anyone who voted "Yes" in the recent referendum has no business or entitlement to stand outside a Catholic church to take up a collection....

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: Excuse me, the Senator has had his say.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I suggest that were Senator Mullen's thinking to flourish, it would not be long before he would stop people from going into the church. I remind him that two thirds of people in this country voted "Yes" on the eighth amendment and I assure the Senator that they were not all non-Catholics. We will leave that for the moment.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I came into the Chamber because I was watching proceedings on the monitor, and heard Senator Craughwell courageously speak out on terms and conditions and pay of public representatives. Local elections will be coming up next May. This is a great exercise in democracy at local level, community involvement and so on. I commend anyone from any party or persuasion, independent or otherwise,...

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: We cannot afford to lose people like that from politics. We as politicians should not be afraid. I congratulate the junior Ministers who sought redress because of the rising costs of hotels in Dublin, with which we are all familiar.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I wish them success.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: There is social media abuse as well.

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: We are supporting the Bill. It is our hope that in voting for the Bill, we will enable peace to be brought forward some little way in the Middle East. I acknowledge the genuine concerns of the spokesperson for the Israeli people who have legitimate concerns, I believe, about the Bill. They must be listened to. As I said in my Second Stage speech, no nation in the history of mankind has...

Seanad: Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018: Report and Final Stages (5 Dec 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: On a point of order, while I have the height of respect for Senator Norris, I am shocked at what he said. Is it appropriate that he would invoke the memory and image of Joseph Goebbels to make a point against the Israeli people? It is absolutely inappropriate and perverted. It would be a disgrace if someone in the Chamber failed to make that comment. I know Senator Norris will reflect on...

Ned O'Sullivan: Amendments Nos. 16, 18, 22 and 26 to 29, inclusive, are related and may be discussed together by agreement. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Ned O'Sullivan: Amendments Nos. 19 to 21, inclusive, are related and may be discussed together.

Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Report Stage (29 Nov 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I second the amendment.

Seanad: Greyhound Racing Bill 2018: Report Stage (29 Nov 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I second the amendment.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: It was nice to see Mrs. Maire Ardagh here this morning. I had the privilege of serving in my first term here with her late husband, Seán. I found him very helpful to me, and a pure gentleman. Mrs. Ardagh herself was a politician in Dublin South and was mayor of South County Dublin. Of course, her son, Mr. Charlie Ardagh, was also a councillor and the Fianna Fáil leader here, of...
