Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child Care: Discussion (7 May 2015)

Mary White: The tragedy is that we spend three or four times more on third level education than we do on child care, when it is far too late. Before a child is born and from the minute a child comes into this world the money needs to go into developing the whole intellectual and emotional development of the child from day one. All the research shows that after two years it is too late. The children...

Mary White: It was not my phone.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child Care: Discussion (7 May 2015)

Mary White: The current lack of vetting will be a scandal in the future. Garda vetting is very limited. This is through no fault of the Garda, but the money must be invested in vetting. There will be a scandal in years to come over people who were not suitable to be minding children and who were not vetted properly. It is chaotic and is worse than it ever was. Senator Henry is wrong. Fianna...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Child Care: Discussion (7 May 2015)

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2015)

Mary White: Yesterday, Mr. Brian Purcell, the new president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants, spoke passionately about the unfair tax treatment of Irish entrepreneurs and said that they would be better off starting up businesses in the UK, Northern Ireland or the US. He called for significant amendments to the tax system to improve the incentives for Irish entrepreneurs to take the risks...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2015)

Mary White: It is a far cry from the claim about the best small country in the world in which to do business. There is another point relating to women entrepreneurs. We are trying to encourage as many women as possible in this regard. If we got as many women to start up businesses every month as the number of men, we would have 500 extra jobs per month. Women entrepreneurs are discriminated against....

Mary White: I am talking seriously about the need for parity.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2015)

Mary White: I know. We have to get parity for indigenous Irish companies and Irish entrepreneurs in respect of multinationals.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Enrolments (29 Apr 2015)

Mary White: The Minister of State is very welcome. I am speaking on behalf of the families of Glencullen, Kilternan, Stepaside, Sandyford and Ballyogan who have no secondary school in their area. There are a number of families comprising two and three generations but there is also a burgeoning population in the area. The fact that there is no secondary school in the area is a very serious deficit....

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Enrolments (29 Apr 2015)

Mary White: In his reply, the Minister of State said that: "consistent with the criteria for establishing all new schools, the patron of this school, which is Educate Together, will be expected to give priority access to children from these feeder areas in its enrolment policy for this school, including children from Glencullen." Does this clarify that children from Glencullen can to go this new school?

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Enrolments (29 Apr 2015)

Mary White: The reply said that "the new post-primary school for the Ballinteer-Stepaside school feeder area is opening in part in response to a need to provide 1,500 extra post-primary school places for children resident in the geographical area in question". That is the problem. I do not think that includes Glencullen.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: School Enrolments (29 Apr 2015)

Mary White: I worked in the school section of the OPW and understand the issue about schools but the map does not make sense so we must address that for families concerned.
