Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: This is primarily our committee.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: Collusion has nothing to do with the Good Friday Agreement. Collusion occurred during the 1970s and 1980s with the British heavily involved with Loyalist paramilitaries in particular.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement deals with the Good Friday Agreement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: Will it be on the agenda?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I accept that, thank you.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I would ask-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I do not want to have this debate with the Chairman next week. In the meantime-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Business of Joint Committee (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I know that. It is an international issue between Ireland and Britain. I could argue the case, but will not, that it has nothing to do with the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. I will be very happy if we deal with it together but I will not be happy if this committee is not involved.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries (Resumed): Asia Matters (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I compliment Mr. Murray on his organisation. Many presentations and submissions are made to us and this might be the third time we have addressed this topic. I would not have a reputation for patronising people but it is probably one of the best and most focused presentations we have had, with clear recommendations and clear arguments underpinning them. I have a few questions on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries (Resumed): Asia Matters (24 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: When did that happen?

Seanad: Teaching Council (Amendment) Bill 2015: Second Stage (23 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire go dtí an Teach inniu chun an Bille um Chomhairle Mhúinteoireacta (Leasú) 2015 a phlé. Is fada an lá ó bhí mise ar scoil ach déanfaidh mé mo dhícheall labhairt faoin mBille agus faoin ábhar tábhachtach seo. I did not get much notice about speaking on the Bill but I listened with care to what the...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: Will the Leader arrange a debate over the next few weeks, perhaps before the end of the month or in early July, with the Minister for Finance specifically to discuss certain taxation issues? Capital gains tax is now becoming the focus of attention for many people. The rate, which was 20%, has been increased by the Minister to 33%, which is close to where it was many years ago. In those...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: Bring back McCreevy.

Seanad: Moore Street Area Renewal and Development Bill 2015: Second Stage [Private Members] (10 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I join my colleagues in supporting this Bill. It is tremendously important in that we are in this House on the eve of the centenary of the most momentous events in Irish history. The struggle for our independence was long, sad and painful. A group of poets, educators and people of peace were inspired to light the flame of Irish freedom in the knowledge they were sacrificing their lives in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: International Conference on Financing for Development Briefing: Dóchas (10 Jun 2015)

Jim Walsh: I thank Dóchas for its submission. Ms Gold talked about sustainable goals. Are they too broad? Do they need to be much more focused? Interestingly, last week I was in New York at a meeting in the United Nations on these issues. Sometimes, it is more about promoting an ideology then targeting and dealing with the real issues. Interestingly, population growth often comes up. In...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade between Ireland and ASEAN Countries (Resumed): Enterprise Ireland (27 May 2015)

Jim Walsh: I welcome the delegation. Our job is to probe to see, in measured terms, what the effect of its work is. I thank Mr. Sherry for his submission. It is light on targets, I think, so I would like to concentrate on that area. Indigenous industry is something we have talked about for some considerable time. I note that Mr. Sherry says there are 300,000 jobs among client companies of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Developing Growth Markets: IDA Ireland (6 May 2015)

Jim Walsh: Just like here.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Developing Growth Markets: IDA Ireland (6 May 2015)

Jim Walsh: I have to leave.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Developing Growth Markets: IDA Ireland (6 May 2015)

Jim Walsh: Yes. I welcome the IDA delegation. Like other members I am well aware of the good work the IDA has done in the past, and continues to do. It is probably not the witnesses' area but a concern I have is that we are a developing a two-tier economy, one in Dublin and one in the rest of the country. There must be much better regional focus by the IDA than is currently the case. Most foreign...

Seanad: Report of the Working Group on Seanad Reform 2015: Statements (5 May 2015)

Jim Walsh: I welcome my former colleagues and thank them for the work they have done on this report. It is another addition to a library of reports on the Seanad. I firmly believe the Dáil is much more in urgent need of fundamental reform than the Seanad because it is a House that is not fit for purpose. We have seen that during this term and in the period of the economic crisis. I do not share...
