Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: I very much support Financial Resolutions Nos. 2 and 3.

Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: In his contribution, Deputy Rabbitte said there was something he did not know. That was unusual. This is an activation budget the purpose of which is to get people back to work and to ensure everybody pays their fair share of tax. In this regard, it is interesting to note that the budget is concerned not only with ensuring that people domiciled abroad who make their income in Ireland should...

Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: It is relevant in the overall context of how much tax people will pay. When couples who provide a caring role or single parents earn as little as €580 or €375 respectively, they are within the tax net. Just as they are prepared to pay tax, it is incumbent on the person domiciled abroad to pay a fair share. Carers will now be able to work up to 15 hours per week.

Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: I am trying to do that.

Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: I will take on board what the Leas-Cheann Comhairle has said. In regard to Financial Resolution No. 2, Deputies Paul McGrath and Rabbitte have expressed their astonishment at the figures. I too am astonished. It is fortuitous that the Minister for Finance has clamped down on this now rather than in three years' time. It is important the staff of the Department of Finance have the resources,...

Financial Resolution No. 2: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: Financial Resolution No. 3 attempts to try to deal with this issue. Relief has heretofore been available on the interest on the loans used to buy the shares in these property rental companies. It is appropriate that this interest relief is disallowed. The estimated yield for 2007 in respect of this resolution is €5 million. Given the extent to which major property magnates are purchasing...

Financial Resolution No. 4: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: Is the Deputy moving?

Financial Resolution No. 4: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: It is a different league altogether.

Financial Resolution No. 4: Income Tax. (7 Dec 2005)

Seán Ardagh: I am happy to support Financial Resolution No. 4. The amount of wealth that has been created here during the past 20 years is amazing particularly for the number of individuals who are extremely wealthy, many of whom have contributed greatly to developments in Ireland, to employment and the capital infrastructure. The whole question of tax equity comes into it. We have been going overboard in...

Dublin-Monaghan Bombings. (25 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: I am sure the Taoiseach is aware that the PSNI has set up an historic inquiries unit in the North to look specifically at the unsolved crimes, bombs and horrendous acts which have occurred. Is the Government considering setting up an equivalent body within the Garda, so that it can work in tandem and in co-operation with the PSNI unit in Northern Ireland? As a resultof so doing, more...

Seán Ardagh: I wish to share time with a number of Fianna Fáil Deputies.

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: I do not have their names with me.

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: Watching television recently I saw Kim Jong II visit China, Beijing in particular, and listening to and reading what Deputy Rabbitte has had to say recently, I could not help wonder if Deputy Rabbitte were to get his hands on power in this country, would Ireland become the North Korea of Europe?

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: This appalling vista would negative all the hard work and effort put in by this and previous Governments over the past 20 years.

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: Throughout Ireland there is much discussion of work permits and labour migration. By limiting the numbers of available workers we would be putting barriers to enterprise creation in Ireland in the future. To do so would put our economy into slowdown mode, moving irreversibly into inflation, higher wages, higher costs, lack of competitiveness, recession, loss of jobs and emigration. It would...

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: One would wonder whether they are members of a Hare Krishna group or of the Labour Party.

EU Services Directive: Motion (Resumed). (26 Jan 2006)

Seán Ardagh: The grunting echoes from the Labour Party benches are worse than the noises made by Maria Sharapova.
