Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: I congratulate my constituency colleague, Deputy Jim O'Keeffe, and Deputy Michael Creed for introducing this necessary reform to the House.

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: In so doing, I condemn the Government for not introducing such reforms before now. I have raised this issue at every available opportunity since my election to the Dáil in 1981 and I have outlined the problems relating to the fishing industry during that period. I am disappointed at the response of the new Minister in his contribution to the debate. Up to now, I have heard the Attorney...

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: The legislation could be amended on Committee Stage. Regardless, as sure as God made little green apples, we will introduce this legislation from the other side of the House in a short time to come.

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: If the Minister holds such strong views on this issue why does he not accept the Bill on Second Stage and come forward with amendments on Committee Stage, at which point he would still have a majority? I hear complaints on a daily basis about the over-vigorous enforcement of regulations by officers of the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority, which has more than twice as many fisheries...

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: It is a pity the Minister did not apply these rules to the banks. Had he done so, some of them would not be hiding from Charlie Bird behind a couch in Boston. The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority has two arms but its right hand acts differently from its left hand in dealing with food safety and fishermen. In an appearance before the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the...

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: I call on the Government to accept Deputy Jim O'Keeffe's Bill. The time is ripe to protect the fishing industry. The Minister must act before it is too late.

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: The Deputy should not be criminalising his skippers.

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: Is that conservation?

Leaders' Questions. (12 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: Rightly so.

Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (11 May 2010)

P J Sheehan: They will die of old age.

Order of Business (28 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: It is a Green joke.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: How will the Minister get me to Dublin, a journey of 250 miles?

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: I would hate to be propping up this Government if I were depending on an electric car to get from Goleen to Dublin.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: The Minister is very familiar with my area.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: That is closed now.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: It is interesting to hear the Minister talking about electric cars. I wonder if they will be able to run from Mizen Head to Malin Head. A recent article in a Sunday newspaper suggested that electric cars will need to be charged for three and a half hours after two thirds of the journey from Dublin to Cork. Apparently, when I start the last lap of my journey - from Fermoy to Goleen - I will...

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: How can that be the case, given that when I leave from Goleen, I am halfway to Dublin by the time I reach Mitchelstown but have not yet left County Cork? A map published in a reliable Sunday newspaper suggested that it will only take me 20 minutes to charge my car in Goleen, but three and a half hours to do so in Fermoy. I cannot imagine that will be the case.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: The Minister seems to be going back to the days 35 years ago when he used to cycle around Schull, Toormore and Goleen. He was a young athletic man at that time.

Electric Vehicles. (27 Apr 2010)

P J Sheehan: He still is. What are the Minister's intentions about extending the national grid-----
