Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Inclusion in Sport: Discussion (11 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: The sports capital grant is not really the vehicle to improve and develop stadiums.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Inclusion in Sport: Discussion (11 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: That is the problem for League of Ireland clubs. The large-scale sport infrastructure fund itself is quite small.

An Garda Síochána: Motion [Private Members] (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I thank the Regional Group for bringing forward this really important motion, and the Minister for coming in and listening to the debate. This Government claims it is committed to stronger and safer communities and that it is committed to a strengthened and well-resourced Garda force. Yet, after decades of Fine Gael at the helm of the Department of Justice I see little or no evidence to...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I thank the Minister for coming in. Senator Cassells asked her what constitutes radical reform. In that context of talking about "radical", has the Minister considered consequences for individual members of the leadership team in RTÉ? There does not appear to have been any consequences for the individual leadership in RTÉ over that whole debacle. In fact, only one person lost...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: There are still a lot of key people there who will continue to change the process, but will still head off into the sunset with a big pension at the end of it all.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: The current leadership, which was there during the debacle and controversy, is still there. In terms of future organisation, will the Minister put in place a mechanism where there are consequences? Will the Minister put in place consequences for individual RTÉ leadership if something like this were to happen again?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I suppose it is particularly hard to watch leadership continue on as if nothing had happened other than changing their work practices and trying to change the culture in RTÉ. Nothing has happened to them and I hear back from people, as I am sure the Minister does, that it sticks in their craw.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I thank the Minister.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: RTÉ Oversight and Long-Term Support and Funding: Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (4 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I thank the Cathaoirleach for the latitude. I highlight the lack of coverage of League of Ireland football. In RTÉ's plans, there are 1,000 hours of sport and 44 hours are of League of Ireland. It is incumbent on RTÉ as a public service broadcaster to promote the domestic game and international games. Leave some other media outlets to look at Turkish, English, French and Spanish...

Childcare Fees: Motion [Private Members] (3 Oct 2023)

Chris Andrews: I would like to acknowledge and thank Deputy Funchion for bringing forward the motion, which is important. Like everybody in the House, I continuously have parents ringing my office looking for advice, support and help to find a place in childcare in their local community. Parents are desperate to find childcare. Most have conceded that affordable childcare in Dublin is impossible to find....

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (28 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: Yesterday, the Garda Representative Association, GRA, made a decisive move in its ongoing dispute with the Garda Commissioner. Earlier this week, I extended an invitation to the GRA to come to Leinster House to give a cross-party briefing on the realities facing front-line gardaí and to ensure that their voices were heard. Community policing is vital in the inner city, but as a result...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: An Garda Síochána (28 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: 223. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of gardaí stationed at Pearse Street Garda station in each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and to date in 2023, across each unit from the community policing, traffic, drugs, and regular units; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [42015/23]

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: An Garda Síochána (28 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: 224. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of gardaí stationed at Kevin Street Garda station in each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and to date in 2023, across each unit from the community policing, traffic, drugs, and regular units; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [42016/23]

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: An Garda Síochána (28 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: 225. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the number of gardaí stationed at Irishtown Garda station in each of the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and to date in 2023, across each unit from the community policing, traffic, drugs, and regular units; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [42017/23]

Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: Child Safety (27 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: 122. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if, following on from his statement in the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children on 20 September 2023, relating to his current lack of confidence in the child safeguarding measures of an organisation (details supplied), and subsequent media coverage of same, he will detail his role and remit, and that of...

Reversal of Planned Fuel Price Increases: Motion [Private Members] (26 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: I thank the Ceann Comhairle and my colleagues for bringing forward this timely motion. In recent weeks we have watched fuel and prices steadily increase. Petrol and diesel prices have increased by 7.6% and 9% respectively. This Government seems hell-bent on ensuring fuel prices hit the €2 mark as soon as possible. This Government is planning two fuel price hikes in October and that...

Children's Health Ireland - Patient safety concerns and reviews in paediatric orthopaedic surgical services: Statements, Questions and Answers (26 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: In 2017, the then Minister for Health, Deputy Harris, declared that no child would wait more than four months for surgery. In August of this year, the Tánaiste said he wanted Ireland to be the best country in Europe in which to be a child. Those comments ring hollow for children with spina bifida and scoliosis. Courtney Manning, a disability advocate, was supposed to be having surgery...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Local Authorities (21 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: That is it exactly.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Local Authorities (21 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: I was just going to say that. It is a nationwide issue. I am sure the Minister of State is aware that Fórsa members in local authorities across the State are in the middle of industrial action. As a public representative, I have seen first hand over the years the brilliant work the estate managers and area officers do for and across communities in my constituency. I know the pressure...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Local Authorities (21 Sep 2023)

Chris Andrews: I agree that this affects all of us in the House. It is an important issue because, like Deputy Collins said, vulnerable people contact us. The reality is that management seems to be sitting on its hands and is content to allow this dispute to escalate. Staff levels are depleted - estate managers who work on the front line are not being replaced for months. That is the case in my...
