Eamon Ryan: ..., at this point of consensus, we could lose it if we are waiting another two or three years for further consultation, assessment, planning or development, as has happened in Dublin where there was too long of a gap between the original proposal and the delivery. That is the most important development. The Deputy is right; if the Department of Education was to step up and say that it...

Ireland's Recognition of the State of Palestine: Statements (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: ...was manageable by paying lip service to the two-state solution and then leaving it to fester, must end." He was right. We in the west averted our gaze and were content to let the situation fester as long as an uneasy peace continued and did not intrude upon our lives. We have learned the hard way that this tactic was not just morally wrong but strategically foolish. We are unequivocal....

Eamon Ryan: I am very glad to be here to give an opening statement on our national energy and climate plan, NECP, and the long-term strategy. The integrated national energy and climate plan collates the policies, measures and actions related to energy and climate outlined in a range of Government plans, such as the climate action plan, the national development plan, and Project Ireland 2040 into one...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: May I finish answering the question? The real challenge is how to plan for long-term change over the next two to three decades so that Ireland can become a zero-carbon country. I am absolutely convinced that we can and will do that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: The long-term strategy will also be published in June. They go together and will both be finalised and agreed next month and, in the case of the NECP, presented to the European Commission. The latter is important because the Commission has to aggregate all NECPs, incorporating them into the European position within the climate negotiations.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: ...am pulling my hair out saying that we have to be quick here. I was down in Cork on Friday, where the public and the councillors are kind of behind BusConnects now. The consultation process is so long that in three years' time when we finally come to the decision, we may have lost the people. That happened in Dublin, where there was really good consultation on BusConnects in 2018.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: It will be really challenging. We have to think long term. It is not just about getting to 2030. We know the European Commission and others are saying we need a 90% reduction by 2040.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: ...refer to the point Deputy Murphy made earlier. There are trade-offs. It is difficult. Sometimes decisions have to be made - not just in Dublin as some of these hard calls will have to be made along the Wicklow coast - in which there will be some impact on biodiversity from some of the renewable power systems we have to develop. We need to make those calls. Part of our biggest problem...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Rail Network (16 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: .... It will be concluded quickly. That has not stopped us. I am focusing on the western rail corridor because I know the Deputy has a personal interest in it and has been committed to it for a long time. That has not stopped us, this spring, from starting to clear the line. It is similar to what we did with the reopening of the Shannon-Foynes line. We started to get a much better...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (16 May 2024)

Eamon Ryan: ...is such difficulty with many of the timetables. This measure involves difficult political decisions where we have to reallocate road space, which we all know is not popular in the short term.
