Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: I thank the witnesses for their presentations and written contributions. We do need to write a report and to direct a lot of questions to the Department of Education and Skills. There is no excuse for reducing timetables. I am not sure who makes those decisions. Is it the schools? Where does that decision come from? We should very clearly state that no school child should have his or her...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: I have to interject. It is legitimate to be critical of teachers. They are not immune from criticism. There are great teachers but it was legitimate to raise the question. There have been a couple of voices, and in fairness we need a bit of balance.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: That is why I interjected.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: We should be entitled to raise the question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: It is valuable to hear Ian's experience because we are all speaking about what should happen for Travellers in the education system but we need to listen to someone who has gone through it. I am impressed by his success in the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition because it is a positive experience for all young people in how it allows them to think for themselves, do research and so...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: Mr. McDonagh said it was with the education and training board.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Traveller Education: Discussion (26 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: Perhaps we should look to other education and training boards on this. Ms White and her colleague, Mr. Hogan, had to get the train but it would have been interesting for them to hear that. It is something we can investigate to see how other education and training boards deal with the process. The homework club seems to have been a key focus in supporting Mr. McDonagh, which is great.

Jan O'Sullivan: Is Deputy Coppinger implying the Labour Party does not stand for a woman's right to choose?

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: I am sharing time with Deputy Sherlock. Tá áthas orm m'ainm a chur faoin rún seo ó gCácas na mBan. Tá áthas orm freisin go bhfuil sé á phlé sa Dáil inniu. This is very much a cross-party motion, which is very welcome. As a member of the Women's Caucus, I thank in particular our chair and deputy chair for introducing the debate, but also...

Period Poverty: Motion (13 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: Both organisations are growing in support right across the country and doing terrific work. No one chooses to menstruate. Those who are struggling financially are facing a cost for looking after their essential health. They should never be forced into a situation in which they need to choose between sanitary products and other basic needs. Others have referred to the fact that this is...

Business Insurance: Motion [Private Members] (13 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: I would like to give two minutes of my time to Deputy Kelleher.

Business Insurance: Motion [Private Members] (13 Mar 2019)

Jan O'Sullivan: I commend Deputy McGrath on bringing this motion before the House. Previous speakers have criticised the insurance companies and described the huge profits they are making, and I agree with them. However, we have to control what those companies do. In any other area of public life, action is taken if something is being done that is contrary to the common good. What we need to do is not...
