Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: I wish to highlight failures in our health system, not just in individual cases such as the woman in Tallaght Hospital Senator Feeney mentioned. Not a day passes without our reading about a serious failure in the health system which points to a fundamental problem in the management of health services in this country. I ask the Leader of the House to schedule a debate as early as possible in...

Seanad: Oncology Services: Statements. (8 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: I will speak briefly on this important debate. I acknowledge that much has been done in respect of both the delivery of cancer services and in preventive care. It has already been observed that in the future, the smoking ban will be regarded as having been one of the most significant moves we could have actively taken in respect of a public health issue. While the campaign for the smoking ban...

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: Last week, the Leader may recall, I requested a post-budget debate on child care provision. I once again ask that we have that. Regarding yesterday's package — it is certainly not a strategy — a small amount has been done, leaving a great deal more to do.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: For instance, where is pre-school education? There is no sign of it in this package, and no sign of flexible working. One cannot have a strategy without those elements.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: I add my support to those seeking the establishment of a committee to examine the use of Shannon Airport in the US war effort. This is an important issue for our democracy. Those campaigning should continue.

Kathleen O'Meara: What about the cost of nursing?

Seanad: Budget Statement 2005: Motion. (7 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: I will confine my remarks to the issue of child care because there is no question that this is the child care budget. It is long overdue for this Government to act. The big surprise in last year's budget was that it contained little or nothing on child care but the pressure has built up in the meantime. I and others have played no small role in ensuring——

Seanad: Budget Statement 2005: Motion. (7 Dec 2005)

Kathleen O'Meara: ——the pressure was applied to force the Government to act. Thanks to the publication of policies like those of our party, the Government has finally been forced to act. What has been presented today, however, falls far short of any indication that the Government has any idea of what it is doing on child care. When is a child care policy a child care policy? In the first instance it is...
