Seanad: Export-led Growth: Motion (19 Jan 2011)

Fiona O'Malley: The Joint Committee on Climate Change and Energy Security, of which I am a member-----

Seanad: Export-led Growth: Motion (19 Jan 2011)

Fiona O'Malley: -----visited Intel more than four months ago because we are concerned about energy costs. It is one of Intel's big problems with Ireland. We heard that costs were getting out of control and that we needed to do something about it, which we did. The fact that Intel has indicated it will reinvest in this country is such a good indicator. What would we have done if it had not done so? It...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Like everybody else, I will start by being nice and wish the staff and Members a happy Christmas. I hope everyone has a good rest over the holidays, and I direct that at the Green Party, in particular. It particularly needs a rest. If it gets a rest, the rest of us might get one and we can come back and work hard in the new year.

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I refer to an article in today's newspaper which states that in light of yesterday's judgment in the European Court of Human Rights, abortion will become an election issue. When we are setting the agenda for the next session next month, will the Leader ask the Minister to bring forward legislation on abortion, as previous Senators have indicated? That very correct judgment yesterday...

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Senator O'Toole raises an interesting point. Is it allowable to in a sense ride roughshod over other rights and entitlements in company law and to subjugate their authority to this one here? It is something we raised on Second Stage about the constitutionality of the Bill. I raise it because I sympathise with the point Senator O'Toole raises about how the Minister is compromising the...

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I seek clarification on a comment the Minister made on the role of the special manager. Will the role be completely different from that of a board member? Will it be the responsibility of the special manager to serve the national interest rather than the institutional interest? Will the Minister confirm that is the case?

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Once the special manager is appointed, does that mean the functions, role and authority of the board of directors are gone?

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Is it the case, if the special manager decided to leave the board in place and the board was agreeable to stay, that they would work together?

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: With the agreement of the House, I will share my time with Senator Hanafin.

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I will make a brief contribution. I sympathise with Senator Quinn about the level of confusion and the steep learning curve all of us are on in understanding the financial and banking situations. I am sure that like many Members he has learned things he never knew about the workings of the financial market. Listening to the debate, I found Senator White's contribution, in particular, to be...

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Indeed, but I welcome Senator White's very measured approach to the situation.

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: That is the reason I wanted to make a contribution. I also found very valid points in Senator Donohoe's contribution. It would be very useful to get a good debate going on Committee Stage about the provisions contained in the Bill. I particularly wanted to echo the questions put by both Senators White and Donohoe, especially that of Senator White concerning preparation in the legislation...

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: -----strengthened before it is enacted. I realise we should not encourage the President as to how she does her job. Senator Quinn also commented on constitutionality. It is not something we can ignore. I hope the President might be inclined to take that action.

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Let everybody make their contribution without interruption.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I wish to share time with Senator Ó Murchú.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Senator O'Toole made a fine contribution in which he addressed the issues of confidence and whether and why we would vote confidence in the Government. It was a measured contribution. His strongest point was about the Taoiseach and how he had performed in the past ten days, in particular. He said, in effect: "Show me a person on any side of the Dáil who would do a better job and has a...

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: That is the Senator's opinion. All of the party leaders should engage in a debate on the budget. We would then see who really does and does not understand economics. In response to Senator O'Toole's remarks, I am happy to vote confidence in the Government. The person who knows about and is in complete command of what is happening is the Taoiseach. He has a supreme command of the...

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Tell that to your finance spokesperson.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Your finance spokesperson constantly questions the mandate.

Seanad: Visit of Parliamentarians (8 Dec 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: Before beginning Private Members' Business, I welcome the delegation of visiting parliamentarians, State Senator John Pippy and State Senator Rod Wright from the United States of America, and Senator Aloisea Inyumba and Deputy Francis Kaboneka from the Republic of Rwanda. On my own behalf, and on behalf of my colleagues in Seanad Éireann, I extend a warm welcome and hope their visit to...
