Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I am absolutely flabbergasted by the Senator's conduct. He will not even let me speak now. He is a bully. He has not allowed me to speak. If he had listened to what I said, he would have heard me say that thankfully, he qualified his point.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: It is almost 25 years since the Control of Dogs Act, to which the amendment refers, was passed and there have been no difficulties. The two previous speakers in referring to those involved in animal welfare mentioned Stalinist Russia and said they are unable to carry out their duties. Senator O'Reilly stated he would have no problem dealing with somebody appointed by the local authority but...

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I am ignoring the Senator so he might as well stay quiet.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: There is no need to bring fear into animal welfare. This is what we should be worried about, not that anybody has any interest other than the welfare of animals. That is what we should concern ourselves with. The amendment, therefore, is not necessary. We should have faith in those who work for our local authorities and who were appointed on the basis of their suitability.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Mar 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I am trying to generate support for Senator Mullen. His request seems reasonable and would ensure consistency throughout the Bill. I am interested to hear the response of the Minister because I do not see how he can argue against what Senator Mullen is seeking, namely, compliance with the law. I leave it to the Minister.

Seanad: Report of Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children: Statements (24 Feb 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I thank Senator Feeney for sharing time. Like other speakers I welcome the Minister of State and pay tribute to the work and dedication of the committee. As the report has taken two years to produce I am sure its recommendations were not arrived at simply or quickly. Therefore, we need a long discussion about the legislation to be drafted and the referendum. Every time a constitutional...

Seanad: Report of Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children: Statements (24 Feb 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I apologise. I thought the Senator said that this will guarantee them rights in hearings on custody issues or other such issues. I misunderstood the Senator. I understood children had these rights. This is something which is long overdue. I endorse something Senator Norris said. We need to be careful in regard to civil partnerships. Words and platitudes are all very well but unless they...

Seanad: Cancer Awareness: Statements (17 Feb 2010)

Fiona O'Malley: I thank Senator Feeney for sharing time because otherwise I would not have had time to contribute. I will be brief. Like Senator Feeney, when the young children came into the Gallery some minutes ago I was struck by how many of them will end up smoking and what would make them smoke. I cannot understand anyone of my generation who smokes because we are very aware of the health issues...
