Seanad: Withdrawal Agreement Between the United Kingdom and the European Union: Motion (23 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I am very grateful to my colleague, Senator Craughwell, for giving me this opportunity. It would be a good idea if the Government sent a copy of this important debate to the British Government so that it can see the strength of feeling in this country. I feel particularly strongly because my father was English. He was an honourable man. He won the marine VC in the First World War. He got...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I propose an amendment to the Order of Business: "That No. 12 be taken before No. 1." This Bill concerned deals with genetic screening, an issue on which I spoke at some length in the previous Seanad. I also raise the business of fobbing in. We are certainly getting mixed messages from the Government. We are being told on the one hand to stay at home, isolate and work from home, but then...

Seanad: Election of Leas-Chathaoirleach (18 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I echo the Members who have said we were lucky in this House to have two such talented candidates for this office. I have known Senator Warfield for some years and have been very impressed by his meticulous attention to detail in discussions with Government and so on. On a number of occasions on which I have visited Government offices with him, he has given very commanding performances. I...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I would like to speak briefly on the Cathaoirleach's contribution. I am taken aback by this measure he has taken. There are various, extremely important matters facing this country, one of them Brexit.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: We are in a terrible situation. There are two views in Britain, one of which is that an Englishman's word is his bond, which was my father's attitude, and the other Mr. Johnson's view, which seems to go with the French view, perfide Albion. How can we trust a country that violates international law? This is a really serious matter and we should not be precluded from discussing it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: When we have an Order of Business.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: May I say on that point-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I appreciate that. As the father of the House, I feel a certain responsibility to the democratic traditions of this House. We have domestic situations around fobbing in. We are told we must fob in. We are also told that we must stay at home, observe social distancing and stay out of the office. The messaging is contradictory.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: Thank you. I want to serve notice that I will be seeking an opportunity to pay tribute to the late Desmond Guinness, who did so much for the culture of Ireland.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Sep 2020)

David Norris: I suggest, a Chathaoirligh, that we agree to meet tomorrow. Then we could have a proper Order of Business today. There would not be the rush and we could have votes tomorrow and today. Would that not solve it, if we met on Friday?
