Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: They are not anonymous.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: Nonsense.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: I congratulate the Minister on amendment No. 24. I am delighted we have reached it. As Senator McDowell stated, we collapsed the argument on earlier amendments in order to ensure it was reached before the guillotine. The whole intention of the Minister, Deputy Ross, was to limit the power of the Government in terms of the advice it gives to the President on the appointment of judges....

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: It is wonderful. The amendment completely undermines the commission and makes it totally redundant. It can be told to bugger off and have its tea.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: My language is perfectly good. I constrain myself.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: The oven is ready for Boris Johnson. The Minister should get judicial appointments done. Let us have judicial appointments that are judicial appointments. Get judicial appointments done. Let us see the Minister, Deputy Ross, done. The Government has given itself the right to appoint any eligible person.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: I cannot hear Senator Conway. He should interrupt me more loudly.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: I will use it very wisely by sitting down and allowing my colleagues to gloat in the discomfiture of the Minister, Deputy Ross, and the wonderful, Houdini-like escape of the Government from this farrago of nonsense. We have done a damn good job in this House. Yes, we held up the Bill for 125 hours or whatever it was. Although some Senators have claimed they were not filibustering, I sure...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: The good ship Ross has sunk without trace. I recall saying in this House on one occasion, about the same Minister, that he has shown great courage but has made an unusual choice, in that most rats jump off sinking ships and he jumped onto one.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (11 Dec 2019)

David Norris: I second the amendment.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

David Norris: Is it 90,000 every day?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

David Norris: What a pleasure it is to see the Cathaoirleach back in office in robust good health. I have been a Member of this House for about 33 years and I can say absolutely that he is just about the best Cathaoirleach this Seanad has ever had in that he is fair, impartial and decent.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Dec 2019)

David Norris: I forgot that the Cathaoirleach is good-humoured as well. I join in the expressions of sadness on the death of Paul Anthony McDermott. He was an incisive, informative commentator on legal matters. He had a very distinctive voice. He died at the very early age of 47. Since we are in the business of paying tributes, I would like to mention briefly the late Professor John Gilmartin. He was a...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: May I ask-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: I would like to ask a question.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: I have a question about Senator Leyden's proposal because it is not clear. I would not know which way to vote on it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: Is Senator Leyden proposing that the debate he is seeking should replace the scheduled debate on the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017 or that the latter would be rolled on until later in the evening?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Nov 2019)

David Norris: Surely Senator Leyden's amendment simply knocks back the debate on the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill until later in the afternoon or evening?
