Government Record: Motion (Resumed). (5 Jul 2006)

Paddy McHugh: I am glad of the opportunity to speak on this Labour Party motion. There is no doubt that everything but the kitchen sink has been included in the motion. Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal (Amendment) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (30 Jun 2006)

Paddy McHugh: To have people infected with contaminated blood products through no fault of their own and with no knowledge that such a thing was happening is tragic. The devastation that must have been caused to the people affected and their families cannot be comprehended. To have such havoc landed on innocent people by a State agency is incomprehensible. Criminal Law (Home Defence) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (28 Jun 2006)

Paddy McHugh: This debate encapsulates the worst aspects of politics — shadow boxing, the "cute hoor" approach and blatant political opportunism. This issue being addressed tonight is very serious. Undoubtedly, the balance of protection must revert to law-abiding citizens who wish to protect their property and families from law breakers. The blatant political opportunism to which I have referred is not...

Criminal Law (Home Defence) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (28 Jun 2006)

Paddy McHugh: If the law is utterly ridiculous and ludicrous today, it was ridiculous and ludicrous in 1997. The sad part is that while this political jockeying goes on, people throughout the country, particularly the elderly, are afraid in their own homes and have no confidence in the political system.

Criminal Law (Home Defence) Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed). (28 Jun 2006)

Paddy McHugh: The Bill confines itself to activities within dwellings but what about incidents with the curtilege of a dwelling house? Why is the Bill so restrictive?
