Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Alliance-Building in the European Union: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: .... I fully support it. I acknowledge the point the witnesses have made on getting funding from the European Union. Matching funding is very hard for some organisations. If there was a fund that could be tapped into, it would mean the money could be released. It sounds like a logical point of view and I would recommend the organisation pursue it, either with the Department of the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: There was once something called phone tapping. This was tapping meetings. I was once a Minister of State at the then Department of Industry and Commerce and I would never expect a member of the European Parliament to be wired up-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Jul 2019)

Terry Leyden: This has had serious repercussions and the Government should act. It should take this as seriously as it would if someone in this House was tapping people's phones or illegally recording the meetings of any of the parliamentary parties.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jan 2016)

Terry Leyden: ...bring great experience to the field. However, the scope of the review has been restricted to access to the phone records of journalists, and does not include politicians. Why would a politician's phone be tapped? Why has the situation been left in doubt? I ask the Leader to ask the Minister to extend the scope of the review. It has been brought to my attention that some legal firms...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2016)

Terry Leyden: ...it is passed by the Dáil. I am referring to the Deputy Niall Collins's Bill relating to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. We should put in safeguards. I had thought the intrusion and tapping of telephones was something we left in the 1980s. Now, it has come about again that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has authorised the tapping of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2016)

Terry Leyden: ...outrageous. The Government should adopt the Bill prepared by Fianna Fáil and bring it to the Seanad before the general election to ensure total restrictions on the right of these individuals to tap the telephones of respected journalists and deprive them of their civic rights. I think it is an outrageous thing and a reflection on this Government if it does not take action as quickly...

Seanad: EU Presidency: Statements, Questions and Answers (10 May 2012)

Terry Leyden: ...maybe" we will get money from the International Monetary Fund and "maybe" we will get money from another source but we are guaranteed money from the stability fund. If we reject the opportunity of tapping into €700 billion why would the IMF decide to support Ireland? We would have to go back to the IMF with our cap in our hands if we needed additional support and were not back in the...

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (23 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: ...were built during difficult times and if the environment was right they worked very well. In some areas they did not work well. It is a question of separating wastewater coming from baths and taps into a septic tank. In the majority of areas they operate very effectively. I accept the greatest difficulties we have are close to sources of water servicing towns and villages. It is...

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Nov 2007)

Terry Leyden: I accept that. I compliment the Garda on the wonderful operation. The Minister said he requires extra support and legislation to allow surveillance and phone tapping to be used in such cases. We should support the Minister and the Government in the fight against crime. Either the criminals or the citizens will win. We must uphold the law and fight to ensure we, not the criminals, win.
