Economic Competitiveness. (9 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: We need better information in this regard and this is why the group has been established. It is not a universal fact that all banks or institutions are acting in the way described by the Deputy. An important aspect which seems to have escaped the notice of the Deputy and should be remarked upon is that prior to the local elections, his own party, which now controls most of the local...

Economic Competitiveness. (9 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: Nothing has been done by your party since. You opposed a more than 3% reduction in Fingal -----

Economic Competitiveness. (9 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: It is very relevant; the Deputy's party was talking about reducing business costs. His party has direct responsibility for local authorities, along with the Labour Party, up and down this country and Fine Gael has signally done nothing to reduce the rates bill and in some cases the rates bill is bigger in Dublin than the rent bill for many businesses. His party has shown nothing and the...

Conor Lenihan: The Deputy's party promised bigger reductions.

Economic Competitiveness. (9 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: Clearly I do not agree with the Deputy's analysis. It is a much more varied picture than he depicts. I know from my experience as a Member of the Dáil that many landlords are reducing their rents in line with the decline in retail and other businesses-----

Economic Competitiveness. (9 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: -----and many landlords are exercising a preference for delayed or postponed rental payments, precisely because they see the status of certain retail business. For example, this has been the case, literally down the road from Leinster House where a restaurant-----

Conor Lenihan: The Deputy is tuning up for coalition.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: It is estimated that over 65% of those teaching mathematics have mathematics as a major qualification in their degree. This figure is deduced by applying the number of mathematics teachers registered with the Teaching Council in February 2010, that is, 4,005, to the estimated number of mathematics teachers in second level schools, which is 5,900. Once recruited into a school, the deployment...

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: Of course I am. That is why Project Maths is dedicated to targeting the people who do not have a major qualification in mathematics and to retraining and qualifying them in a more appropriate manner.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I am not aware of that.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: That will be subject to the Estimates.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: It will be a matter for the Estimates.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: Does Deputy Hayes wish to ask a question?

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: We are adding an extra 350 teachers this year.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I repeat that €5 million is being spent on in-service training. Deputy Hayes is wrong in assuming the training will not be targeted at people who do not have a qualification in mathematics. That is the whole purpose of Project Maths. I come at this from two perspectives. I also have responsibility for science, technology and innovation.

Teaching Qualifications. (4 Mar 2010)

Conor Lenihan: The efforts being made in this area are very much welcomed and should be welcomed. Those involved in industry inward investment have expressed concern at the quality of mathematics teaching and have stressed the importance of upgrading teaching skills, in the interest of the smart economy. Money is being allocated for that.
