Tom Kitt: The number of marriages registered in 2004 is not yet available. The number of marriages registered in 2003 was 20,302. This equates to 510 marriages per 100,000 population. This figure is subject to revision.

Tom Kitt: The most comprehensive details in respect of the numbers of separated and divorced persons comes from the census of population. The results of the 2002 census indicate that there were 99,000 separated persons and a further 35,000 divorced persons in the State on 28 April 2002.

Tom Kitt: The number of private households distinguished in the 1996 census was 1,123,200. The corresponding figure in 2002 was 1,288,000 — an increase of 14.7% over the six years.
