Labour Affairs: Motion (Resumed). (22 Feb 2006)

Jim Glennon: While the minimum wage has been an important development, it is the product of the social partnership model we have had for the past decade or so and has been championed by the Taoiseach, Deputy Bertie Ahern. He has driven it and nobody has been to the forefront of the social partnership model more than he has. It has been the model on which the boom in our economy is based. It is the way...

Labour Affairs: Motion (Resumed). (22 Feb 2006)

Jim Glennon: Comments were made earlier about immigrant labour and we are aware of the difficulties that have arisen, but the day is not too far away when the immigrant representative groups will be around the table at the social partnership talks because they are now such a significant element in our economy and workforce. They are to be embraced and we must extend the model of co-operation and inclusion...

Labour Affairs: Motion (Resumed). (22 Feb 2006)

Jim Glennon: Deputy Joe Higgins is the ideologue. He has the Marxist-Leninist attitude which Sinn Féin has. If Deputy Joe Higgins allowed Sinn Féin into his party, there would be some humour in it because Deputy Higgins has some humour, can laugh occasionally and make some very interesting comments in the House.

Labour Affairs: Motion (Resumed). (22 Feb 2006)

Jim Glennon: In this regard Sinn Féin has only one recipe, for economic disaster. I ask the party to rethink what it is doing and how it is doing it, to allow this country continue in the way it is going, with the Government it has, for further success in the economy in the future.

Jim Glennon: I thank Deputy Healy-Rae for sharing time. I take this opportunity to congratulate the Minister of State, Deputy Gallagher, on his tremendous work over a long number of years in the area of sea fisheries. There is probably no other Deputy in the House as well qualified, or with the deep experience of the marine and fishing activities, as the Minister of State with regard to this issue. When I...

Reform of the Competition Act 2002: Motion (Resumed). (16 Nov 2005)

Jim Glennon: Go raibh míle maith agat. Modesty forbids. In the dim and distant past, when I was growing up in a small town in north County Dublin with a population of 2,500, we had 15 grocery shops by my best count. We also had 15 public houses, which says something about Irish society at the time. That town's economy was based entirely on the months of July and August, when visitors would come from...

Road Safety: Motion (Resumed). (9 Nov 2005)

Jim Glennon: Like my colleagues, while I am glad to have an opportunity to contribute on this important topic, it does not give me satisfaction to have to deal with it. I am interested in the number of road fatalities in recent years. In 2003 there were 335 deaths on the road, compared to 472 in 1997. When one takes into account the number of additional vehicles on the road over that period the statistic...

Ferns Report: Statements (Resumed). (9 Nov 2005)

Jim Glennon: I wish to share time with my colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, Deputy Browne. While I am glad of the opportunity to contribute to such an important debate, like my colleagues I regret the situation that has given rise to this debate. Like Deputy Neville, I am a member of the Roman Catholic Church and describe myself as an á la carte Catholic. I also...
