Seanad: Crime Levels: Statements. (3 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: —I got a size ten from my father. Senator Ormonde is correct when she says parents have a responsibility.

Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister and his statement on Government policy and provision of services for the elderly. He has certainly given a broad outline of the services and the methods by which he intends to assist the home help service and the nursing home subvention scheme and support carers. Much has been done, but there anomalies in the report. Prevention may be the best cure.

Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: We are in training.

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: Recently I highlighted the issue of lack of decentralisation to areas which had not already benefited. The Leader joined me in calling for a debate on the issue. I am very disappointed that a debate has not taken place and urge the Leader to ensure it takes place as soon as possible.

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister of State. It is always good to see somebody who has strong roots in my county here. Roscommon people normally stick together.

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: We will not be too hard on the Minister of State whose contribution I welcome. I also welcomed the announcement of a ban on smoking in all workplaces from 1 January next. The majority do not recognise the health problems smoking has caused here and elsewhere during the years. Passive smoking must be attacked at all times. It is welcome that people will not be permitted to smoke in pubs,...

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: Although I was never a smoker, I found my health deteriorating, which was one of the reasons I left the pub. After five years working there I knew that it was not the work that would kill me but the people who smoked. One could not tell people at the time that they could not smoke in a pub because we were told that it was part of the atmosphere and ambience. Therefore, I welcome the...

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: In every area, not in every county.

Seanad: Cancer Treatment Services: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: The Senator can thank Deputy Cowley for that.

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I thank Senator Henry for introducing this motion, which I support. Comments have been made about the Office of Public Works which, I accept, has carried out many great projects around the country. However, the Office of Public Works has squandered vast financial resources over many years. In some instances, there is a strong case for public...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Frank Feighan: Perhaps the Senator had a ride in a police car.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Dental Service. (7 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: I wish to ask the Minister of State for Health and Children, Deputy Tim O'Malley, why people with multiple handicaps in County Roscommon cannot avail of a senior orthodontist. I believe this is their right, particularly in the year of the disabled. The non-availability of a senior orthodontist in the county has gone on far too long.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: Over three and a half years ago the Minister for Finance announced that the decentralisation programme would focus on areas which had not previously benefited from it. The Leader promised a debate on decentralisation before Easter. Such a debate is urgent because the junior partner in the Government appears to be promising jobs. I hope those jobs will come to areas that have not already benefited.

Seanad: National Standards for Foster Care: Statements. (8 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. It was reassuring that he visited my county last Tuesday, where he is very popular. He is welcome back to Dublin.

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: Does it have a Minister?

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: I join my colleague in calling for a debate on decentralisation. We have spoken of dispersal of people and jobs. There is a serious problem in rural areas which have not benefited from decentralisation. This Government has an opportunity to decentralise jobs to such areas. I want a debate now, not when all the jobs have been divvied up by the Cabinet. I call on the Leader to arrange that debate.

Seanad: Health Service: Statements. (13 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: His Senators are certainly loyal to him. The state of a country's health service is one of the test areas for determining if this is an advanced economy.

Seanad: Health Service: Statements. (13 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: Apology accepted. We fail the acid test of health provision. That is not to say that there are not thousands of excellent people involved in the health service. We all know many individuals who are totally dedicated, committed and professional in their approach. I have recently been in Sligo General Hospital and admit that there are areas in it where the service is doing well, such as cardiac...

Seanad: Health Service: Statements. (13 May 2003)

Frank Feighan: I thought she was referring to Hong Kong dollars.

Seanad: Health Service: Statements. (13 May 2003)
