Geraldine Feeney: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "Seanad Éireann" and substitute the following: "–commends the Government for its unparalleled increases in health funding; –commends the Government's health strategy which is firmly grounded in the principles of equity, accountability, fairness and people-centredness; –recognises the Government's continued commitment as stated in the...

Seanad: Health Services: Motion. (26 Mar 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: We would not know about that.

Seanad: Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland Bill 2002: Committee Stage. (2 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I thank the Minister of State for attending and Senator John Phelan for his nice remarks. I am sure he will receive a high preference next time. Sitting suspended at 3.25 p.m. and resumed at 4p.m.

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I join other Senators in condemning what happened outside Leinster House last night. Driving in this morning I listened to Pat Kenny's radio show. He was interviewing a Roman Catholic priest who was at the protest last night.

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: Yes. I would ask the Leader to pass this on to the relevant authority. The priest said this was the seventh protest he had attended. He said the rest of them were all very peaceful and quite enjoyable but yesterday there was a small group of militant people who provoked, jeered at and joked about the younger members of the Garda Síochána in particular.

Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I am asking the Leader to pass on a message to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to say congratulations and well done to the members of the force last night. They certainly played a blinder and looked after us very well.

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Police Co-Operation) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (8 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: Like other colleagues, I welcome the Minister of State and his officials to deal with this short but enabling Bill. It is important legislation that is apt at this time. If memory serves me correctly, next Friday is the fifth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. It shows a positive aspect of how we, on the southern part of the island, are moving matters along.

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Police Co-Operation) Bill 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I ask the Minister of State to consider some brief questions. After the disciplinary action has been heard in the North and the issue has been dealt with by the Garda Commissioner in this jurisdiction, would the Minister see his way to granting a garda or his/her legal or union representative the right of audience with the commissioner or deputy commissioner? I do not suggest that the case...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Police Co-Operation) Bill 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: It related to action taken following a disciplinary action. Will it be possible to provide for a suspension rather than a dismissal or a requirement to retire or resign? The latter requirements are the same, in effect, as a dismissal. Could room be made for a suspension, even a suspension with conditions?

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Police Co-Operation) Bill 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I ask the Minister of State to consider, where a garda was under the spotlight and a hearing was pending, that he or she should not be allowed resign until that hearing was heard. That might resolve the problem Senators Hayes and Walsh spoke about. The person would be more or less locked in – if that is not too strong a description – until the disciplinary action was heard. They would not...

Seanad: Garda Síochána (Police Co-Operation) Bill 2003: Committee and Remaining Stages. (9 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I too want to be associated with the sentiments of other Senators. I thank the Minister of State, Deputy O'Dea, and the officials from his Department. Senator Terry said that the Bill went through very speedily and with no real upset. This was down to those efficient, hard-working Department officials who have been in the House for the past two days. The timing of the Bill is important. It is...

Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister of State and commend him on his excellent contribution, which says much about the kind of person he is and the amount of hard work he invests in his brief. I do not say that lightly, because I have heard similar comments from nurses and doctors who hold the Minister of State in high esteem. Senator Feighan concluded with a quote and I will commence by doing likewise. I...

Seanad: Government Policy and the Provision of Services for the Elderly: Statements. (15 Apr 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: We rescued them.
