Seanad: Recall of Irish Pork and Bacon Products: Statements (10 Dec 2008)

John Ellis: I welcome the Minister of State to the House to discuss what may have been one of the most frightening agricultural crises since the BSE scare. I hope that, by discussing the matter, the House will not do the food industry unnecessary damage.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2008)

John Ellis: Every Senator is concerned about the events which have taken place over recent days. I appreciate the fact that the Leader has arranged time tomorrow to hold a full debate on the matter. Statements could be made in the Chamber that cannot be made publicly outside these Houses with regard to the actions of certain individuals, although not all farmers are implicated. I do not refer to the...

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

John Ellis: On a point of order, the Government Whip intimated to the Cathaoirleach prior to the vote being called. He did rise to make the Chair aware of his intention to call for a walk-through vote.

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

John Ellis: On a point of order, Senator Wilson did rise to raise the question. It is not the Cathaoirleach's fault but because of where his chair is positioned, he cannot see anybody on that side. I do not know what the mechanism is for resolving this.

John Ellis: On a point of order, a Chathaoirligh——

Seanad: Charities Bill 2007: Committee Stage (4 Dec 2008)

John Ellis: I refer to what you said two minutes ago, a Chathaoirligh. You accepted that if you had seen Senator Wilson rise, although you said you did not, he would have been entitled to call for the vote, as he intimated he intended to do. Therefore, I believe he is entitled to get the vote.

Seanad: Death of Member: Expressions of Sympathy (18 Nov 2008)

John Ellis: I would like to be associated with the expressions of sympathy to Ann and her family. I have the unique distinction of the membership of this House as being the one who came into this House on the same day as Séamus Brennan 31 years ago in 1977. We all came in here full of joy and full of hope, a young new group of people. However, many of us had come here only because of the previous four...
