Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (5 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: That was hearsay.

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (5 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Was the Senator checking his post?

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (5 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I compliment the Minister of State, Deputy McDaid, the Minister, Deputy Brennan, and their staff for the huge developments that have taken place in road safety in recent months. The achievement is obviously based on work that has taken place over a number of years. The motion tabled by the Independent Senators provides us with the opportunity to discuss what is thankfully a good story. We are...

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (5 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: We could talk about that at length, as Senator Phelan well knows. The penalty points system has only been in operation for a short time, yet the results speak for themselves. I hope people will work with it. In the coming months we can examine some of the enforcement issues that will undoubtedly arise. I travel from Clare to Dublin every week, using the main Limerick to Dublin road, and while...

Seanad: Road Safety: Motion. (5 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: Did the Senator pay his tax? Will he pay it next time?

Seanad: Iraq Crisis: Statements (Resumed). (6 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I will be brief as we have gone over our time. I join my colleagues in welcoming the Minister of State to address this issue, which is clearly of great international concern. The events that occur over the next few weeks and months are likely to set the international political and economic agenda not only for the rest of the year but also for many years to come. I compliment the Minister of...

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: When did the contents of The Irish Times become Government policy? (Interruptions).

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: That is outrageous. The Senator should retract that allegation.

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the Minister to the House. I thank the Ministers of State, Deputies Aylward and Treacy, for the work they have done this evening. I commend them and the Department for the excellent work they have done in facing the crises that have befallen the agricultural sector in recent years. None of us has any doubts about the extent to which the whole sector has been affected by many...

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: The debate would have shown the country and the European Union that Ireland stands firmly behind one of the most competent Ministers on the European stage as he negotiates on our behalf. The future of Irish agriculture depends on the negotiating skills of the three Ministers who have been with us tonight. It would have been nice to see support across the House but, as Senator Dardis said,...

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: It is worth repeating. In a short time in office, the Fine Gael Government drove us to the brink of bankruptcy. That is worth noting.

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: We can go back even further and I will be able to prove that any time the Fine Gael Party was involved in Government we were on the brink and thankfully Fianna Fáil succeeded in bringing us back.

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I will encourage the Opposition as best I can because it is having a difficult time and it would be nice to see it come up with some relevant proposals for the future of the agricultural sector. If shock tactics are required, perhaps I will be responsible for the resurgence of Fine Gael.

Seanad: Fischler Proposals for Agriculture: Motion. (12 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: The Minister's determination to oppose the proposals is well founded. Commissioner Fischler's draft proposals have not changed to any great extent. Since then not only our Government but a number of other member states have lobbied the Commissioner, presenting strong cases for change. Examining the final proposals, however, it is obvious that many of the draft proposals have not been taken...

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I join Senator Scanlon in calling for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to come to the House to discuss the issue of Dúchas. Difficulties arose at the weekend, when members of Dúchas were seen arguing with representatives of other archaeological bodies with regard to the Carrickmines interchange on the M50 motorway. Everyone realises that the latter is of vital importance.

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I am asking for a debate on Dúchas and its role.

Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements. (18 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the Minister who has taken an enlightened approach to the subject of rural development policy, particularly with regard to the problem of population decline in rural areas. While I lack the objectivity Senator O'Toole displayed in identifying Kilrush as a centre to which a number of Departments should be transferred, I would be delighted to discuss this matter with him and perhaps...

Seanad: Rural Development Policy: Statements. (18 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: For too long, the rural parts of Ireland have experienced a brain drain, with the brightest and best from all over the country moving to the big towns and cities. That is where the jobs are and where people have had to go for further education. Many Members were part of that process. There is a significant cost to society, particularly in rural areas, as a result of these necessities. Rural...

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: The Senator is in the Seanad now, not the county council.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Feb 2003)

Timmy Dooley: I join Senator O'Toole in calling for a debate on auctioneers because there is an element of innuendo in this House. Senator Ross has tabled a motion in condemnation of auctioneers. Many of us know some fine auctioneers. Certainly any of the experiences or stories that I have heard have always been in support of auctioneers and a debate would help to clarify this matter.
