Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: ——or else they are ill informed about what is in this treaty. They must be honest with the farmers of rural Ireland. They must set it out.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: How many times was the treaty debated yesterday on the Order of Business? Untruths were peddled in this chamber and they are from misinformants who are being dishonest, disingenuous——

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: ——to the agricultural community on an issue of vital importance.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: No.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: They back up the copious arguments about the international trade agreements.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: I said international trade agreements, not agricultural negotiations.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Does Ireland have a veto on international trade agreements at present?

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: And for the Senator. Hopefully, the Senators will withdraw some of the untruths that have been voiced.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: On a point of order, when the Leader is seeking that clarification can he also ascertain whether or not the "Yes" side's posters, erected before the writ for the referendum was moved, are also illegal? I want that clarified.

Seanad: Economic Outlook: Motion (14 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Gabhaim buíochas leis an tSeanadóir Quinn as ucht a chuid ama a roinnt liom sa díospóireacht seo. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire fosta. There is no doubt but that the impact of the economic slowdown and the rising cost of living are beginning to be felt by people across the State. Many of those who borrowed heavily when house prices were at their highest face an uncertain future due to a...

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements (Resumed) (21 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: During recent weeks there has been much debate in this Chamber on the World Trade Organisation and the implications the Lisbon treaty will have on the conclusion of any agreements the WTO talks will reach. One of the reasons this debate was tabled was to issue some clarity. However, I note from the printed version of the Minister's speech that neither the word "Lisbon" nor "veto" appears in...

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements (Resumed) (21 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: I have two specific questions for the Minister of State. The second question is very detailed, and if he cannot respond, can he write to me as soon as possible with the detailed information that I request? The Minister of State and the Minister both alluded to my first question. Does the Minister of State believe that no agreement will be reached on the WTO talks before the Lisbon treaty...

Seanad: HSE Child Welfare and Protection Services: Statements (21 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Seanadóir Mullen faoin a am a roinnt liom agus cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. My colleague, Deputy Ó Caoláin, secured a Dáil adjournment debate last week on the crisis in child protection. I want to emphasise some of the points he made during that debate, but first I wish to address the reply given to him by the Minister of State, Deputy Máire Hoctor, in...

Seanad: HSE Child Welfare and Protection Services: Statements (21 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: I appreciate that the Minister of State is new to the office, and I wish him well. My party will be fully supportive of any initiatives brought forward to deal with this issue, which I believe is in crisis. If we are to deal with this effectively, we need to recognise that there is a problem. The "Prime Time Investigates" programme was one of the most difficult I have had to watch. I...

Seanad: Transport 21: Motion (21 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Seanadóir Ó Tuathail as ucht a chuid ama a roinnt liom. I welcome the debate on Transport 21 and will focus comment on a number of issues. The Minister of State mentioned that Transport 21 deals with a legacy of neglect. They may not have been his exact words, rather they are mine, but it deals with the lack of investment in previous years. There is no doubt...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Second Stage (Resumed) (28 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Is í an cheist is tábhachtaí sa Bhille seo ná an chosaint a chaithimid a thabhairt do chaighdeán craolacháin sna meáin cumarsáide. Go ginearálta, caithimid aithint go bhfuil caighdeán iontach ard ag an teilifís agus an raidió sa tír seo. Nuair a amharcann muid ar cad atá ag tarlú i dtíortha eile, feiceann muid nach bhfuil an cás mar an gcéanna sna tíortha sin. Caithfimid...

Seanad: Health Services: Motion (28 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Seanadóir Norris as ucht a chuid ama a roinnt liom. Táim ag tacú leis an rún atá molta ag Páirtí an Lucht Oibre. Glacaim leis go bhfuil fadhbanna leis na seirbhísí sláinte agus nach bhfuil siad ag obair mar is ceart. Caithimid díriú ar na fáthanna nach bhfuil siad ag obair mar is ceart. It is not enough to say that the HSE is overly bureaucratic,...

Seanad: Health Services: Motion (28 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: That man is frail with lung and other health problems. I ask every Government Senator who is thinking of voting on this motion to consider if this was his or her father or mother. This is not a direct result of the work of the Minister, Deputy Mary Harney, or Professor Brendan Drumm, but the system failed that man.

Seanad: Health Services: Motion (28 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: It is, because unfortunately——

Seanad: Health Services: Motion (28 May 2008)

Pearse Doherty: Unfortunately, we all know of such cases and it is not right to put one case above another. We all know of the injustices and indignities that people face at the hands of the two-tier health system. This needs to be addressed and we need the political will to do so, which is not present on the Government side of the House.
