- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government (14 Sep 2016)
Pat Casey: I will be fairly brief. We mentioned the question of Airbnb at the start of the meeting before the Minister came in. We have agreed to meet a delegation from Airbnb in the near future. However, this was not discussed at the special committee on housing. This is a solution to the crisis and I think it needs to be considered. It is disappointing that we are housing families and homeless...
- Housing Strategy: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: Last week when I spoke in the House, I protested at the lack of scheduled debating time for this plan. I am glad to see that not only has some extra time been allocated but that I am the beneficiary of it.
- Housing Strategy: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: It is new politics at work. As I have stated previously, this Dáil will be rightly judged on its ability to deliver on housing and homelessness. The Government action plan announced yesterday, while comprehensive, has omitted some details which I will try to outline. However, we will save the plaudits until the plan is actually delivered.
- Housing Strategy: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: I would also like to say at the outset that substantial cross-party work has been achieved on housing and that has been acknowledged by both Ministers. I am disappointed, however, with the selected leaking of the report to media prior to its publication.
- Housing Strategy: Statements (Resumed) (20 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: That is old politics and disrespectful to the genuine efforts of the Opposition Members who engaged constructively on the housing crisis. I hope, for the future of new politics, that this is the last of the spinning as we move towards a Government and a Parliament working together as the people rightly demanded. The very first line of the report states that housing is a basic human...
- Housing (Sale of Local Authority Housing) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (20 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: The tenant purchase scheme introduced by the previous Government in January has received only 73 applications countrywide to date. The reason given for excluding Part V houses from the tenant purchase scheme was to ensure that the aim of Part V - that is, to have social housing stock available in private housing developments - was not diluted. If, however, the logic of that reason was...

- Report of the Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Motion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: Given that I had the opportunity last week to speak on this, I will not speak directly on it. Instead, I raise my concern about the draft proposed business for next week and acknowledge the work the committee has done over a nine week period. The Minister will launch his strategy next Tuesday. However, this forum has been given only two hours in which to debate the strategy, which is the...
- Report of the Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Motion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: There is much more to say.
- Report of the Committee on Housing and Homelessness: Motion (7 Jul 2016)
Pat Casey: As spokesperson on housing and urban renewal, I welcome the committee's report on housing and homelessness. Under the chairmanship of my colleague, Deputy John Curran, the committee has produced a comprehensive document which understands the depth and the breadth of the Irish housing and homelessness crisis. The manner in which the committee was formed and conducted its business which,...

- Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 34 - Environment, Community and Local Government (Revised) (30 Jun 2016) Pat Casey: My concern is that the total spend up to 23 June did not even reach on quarter of the total allocation. Is that normal? Of a total allocation of €538 million, only €117 million was spent up to 23 June. Is the money not being spent? Is it normal for spending to take place in the second half of the year? As this is my first attempt at this, I do not know what has happened...
- Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 34 - Environment, Community and Local Government (Revised) (30 Jun 2016) Pat Casey: This is not specifically on the figures, but it is around them. First, it relates to the subvention of Irish Water from motor taxation of nearly €586 million. Coming from a rural community and seeing local and regional roads deteriorate over the last few years, the fact that only 30% of the motor tax fund has been spent on road infrastructure is a concern. My other question...
